They are both arbitrary AND ambiguous, which means they’re unreliable as an indicator of how serious the interviewee is or how undivided their attention is.
One can choose to view it as a reliable indicator of those things, but I would say that’s a lazy and intrinsically conservative position.

I say this as a Californian: deep blue states foster some of the worst Democrats. Not exclusively, but definitely seemingly disproportionately. The wealthy will find politicians they can capture and corrupt. They may consider Republicans easier, but if Rs are powerless the grift,uh… finds a way.

I think Tabasco is a lot more defensible as a “spicy vinegar sauce” than a “hot sauce.” Its acidity is its strength, not its heat.
