The War on Germany’s ‘Culture of Remembrance.’
A Germany serious about guarding against any return to its 20th-century extremes, then, would stay as far away from anti-Zionism as is humanly possible. One cannot be vigilant in one’s anti-Nazism while also dabbling in anti-Zionism.
THE RIGHT-WING ALTERNATIVE FOR GERMANY'S (AfD) victory in local elections this past weekend served as an unsettling reminder of a Western political reality: It's not just the left that's aiming to dismantle Germany's "culture of remembrance" and thereby dilute the historical force of the Holocaust. The AfD is considered more than a party of cranks; it is treated by the rest of Germany's political establishment as a national security threat, especially regarding its pro-Russia bent. But it has mostly built its momentum on opposition to immigration. The party's theorists have paired border sovereignty with calls for increased national pride to free German society from what the party sees as a WWII guilt complex. Politico Europe's James Angelos describes the basic dynamic well: "Germany's much-vaunted Erinnerungskultur, or culture of remembrance, is central to its self-conception - and long served as an existential imperative. Though halting, West Germany's reckoning with Nazi crimes and the Holocaust in the decades after the end of World War II served to help restore the country's standing among democratic nations, making possible its membership in Western alliances. The country's constitution was shaped in repudiation of Nazism, with safeguards intended to prevent its resurgence." The AfD won enough seats in local elections to put it within spitting distance of an outright majority in the Saxony-Anhalt government. Although Saxony-Anhalt is only one of 16 German states, and not a particularly populous one, state governments have much control over what goes on in the classroom. They also participate at the federal level in Germany's version of the Senate. Plus, the sheer magnitude of AfD's victory could open opportunities elsewhere for the party. Education would be the main ideological target of the party, should it find itself in position to govern. Specifically, it wants to leave the past behind. As one influential AfD ideas man, Hans-Thomas Tillschneider, put it: "Good history classes convey a sense of the otherness of the past." Regarding Holocaust memory, party figures have a history of choosing their words less carefully than Tillschneider does. "We Germans — our people are the only people in the world to have planted a monument of shame in the heart of its capital," AfD's Björn Höcke said in 2017. "We need nothing less than a 180-degree turnaround in the politics of remembrance." The AfD's Saxony-Anhalt political platform also says that the focus on Germany's Nazi history has "led to a situation where national pride is generally considered disreputable, the defense of one's own interests is perceived as indecent, and politicians avoid any positive reference to our rich history before 1933." Germany's "culture of remembrance," meanwhile, has been under fire for years from the global left. Those attacks have reached a crescendo in the post-October 7 world. Progressives have been hammering away at societal norms around the Holocaust because they believe a Germany freed from its collective guilt will join the war on Israel. In 2023 I wrote about a particularly grotesque version of this from M. Gessen in the New Yorker. Initially, Gessen found it "exhilarating to watch memory culture take shape" in Berlin. But the social taboo against calling the Jewish state the new version of Nazi Germany-in other words, the social taboo against Holocaust revisionism and other forms of anti-Semitic blame shifting-soured Gessen on the concept. The complaint that Germany's rigid anti-Nazism has prevented it from becoming sufficiently anti-Zionist has become a common one. Pankaj Mishra in the Guardian, Nikki Columbus in the Nation, and various academic renderings of the argument have sprouted up. The most famous version of this argument is A. Dirk Moses's 2021 essay "The German Catechism." To Germany's self-conception, Moses pronounced, the Holocaust "is a sacred trauma that cannot be contaminated by profane ones - meaning non-Jewish victims and other genocides - that would vitiate its sacrificial function." Moses's complaint that the Jews have essentially become an object of worship in Germany provides a fascinating glimpse into his active imagination. But it also reveals his anger at this new Jewish deity, which he believes has been imposed upon the public in order to satisfy "American, British and Israeli elites." Eventually Moses gets around to the driving force behind his fury at Holocaust memory: Germany's rejection of BDS. Now, to most people with a grasp of history, Germany rejecting BDS would make sense. The BDS movement is an anti-Jewish boycott whose founders see the policy as part of a strategy to destroy the Jewish nation. The wider pro-Palestinian movement pushing BDS has also fully embraced blood-and-soil nationalism-"From water to water, Palestine is Arab," etc.—whose goal is the ethnic cleansing of Jews. A Germany serious about guarding against any return to its 20th-century extremes, then, would stay as far away from anti-Zionism as is humanly possible. One cannot be vigilant in one's anti-Nazism while also dabbling in anti-Zionism. Which means that, to folks like Moses, the uncompromising anti-Nazism has to change: "having symbolically expunged Nazis from the nation-in-redemption in serial scandals about the Nazi past since the 1960s, the compulsion continues long after they have gone." The Nazis are dead and buried, according to this line of thinking, so it's prudent now to gang up on the Jews. The original consensus was an understanding-or at least acceptance—on both right and left that Germany had a responsibility to keep public Jew-baiting and the lust for Jewish destruction at bay. That is still the position of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who has valiantly refused to waver. But the founding idea of postwar Europe is under assault from right and left, and the center might now be too weak to hold.

The sight of tens of thousands of would-be immigrants storming into Spain's north African enclave of Ceuta last week was an arresting image. A huge flow of migrants, juxtaposed with the apparent impotence of the authorities tasked with defending their borders, strikingly represented the challenge that mass immigration poses to Europe. At least, that is how it looked on the surface; but some observers thought they detected the hidden hand of Zionism behind those shocking scenes. Hollywood actor Javier Bardem took to social media to suggest that, one way or another, Israel and the far right' was 'punishing' Spain for calling the conflict in Gaza a genocide. 'Ceuta: Did Israel and US engineer the crisis?, asked Owen Jones breathlessly, before admitting he had no proof that they did - but it 'surely demands explanation'. It's the kind of reasoning that some people have always reached for to provide order and purpose, and to assign blame for unwelcome, chaotic events. When something bad happens, there must be a bunch of Jews - in one form or another - pulling the strings. Israel is just the latest label to be slapped onto this particular conspiracy theory. But whereas in the past, this kind of nonsense was limited to fascist agitators, Islamist demagogues and conspiracy cranks, now it is embraced by a much wider and more influential audience This latest episode comes at a time when the number of anti-Semitic incidents recorded in the UK keeps rising: a 21 per cent increase in the first six months of 2026, according to the Community Security Trust, the charity that provides security for the UK Jewish community. The worst of these was the stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green, alongside the arson attacks on synagogues and Jewish community ambulances, almost certainly orchestrated by Iran. But most anti-Semitism is not so violent. Instead, it is made up of language and ideas: shouts in the street, threats online, graffiti on walls, much of which expresses the basic idea that Jews today are genocidal baby-killers, guilty of the worst of crimes. The accusation of genocide and child-murder is also the message that has animated and energised the anti-Israel movement ever since Hamas stormed into Israel on 7 October 2023. That event has proven to be a dramatically radicalising moment for this country. The combination of international conflict, terrorism, street protest, hate crimes, hostile state meddling and fraying community cohesion is unmatched. That it revolves around the Holy Land provides a unique cultural anchor. Of course, anti-Semitism has risen in this atmosphere - it always does. It is impossible to avoid the evidence that it is anti-Israel sentiment keeping the numbers of anti-Jewish incidents so high. More than 40 per cent of all incidents reported to CST involved some mention of events in the Middle East, alongside the anti-Semitism. If a Jewish person is harassed in the street nowadays, it is much more likely to be with a shout of 'Free Palestine' than 'Heil Hitler'. The already-elevated number of incidents climbed even further when the war against Iran began at the end of February. It spiked again, with every high-profile attack on the Jewish community in the UK a reminder that the sight of Jews being harmed excites anti-Semites to do more. Tackling this rise requires honesty about who is behind it. Islamist extremism poses the greatest violent threat to Jews right now. More broadly, while most incident perpetrators in the report were described to CST as white (where a description was obtained), in almost a quarter of all incidents the perpetrators were described as Arab or north African - a starkly disproportionate figure to the general population. Measures to reduce anti-Semitism are essential, but will only work if they are targeted where they are most needed. This all means that the neat distinction that politicians and commentators like to draw between anti-Semitism and criticism of Israel is of limited value, because the two categories do not reside in separate universes. It is a truism that it is not antiSemitic to criticise the Israeli government, just as it is not racist to criticise the actions of any government. Indeed, many such criticisms may be well-founded. But it is also true that anti-Jewish hatred rises in parallel with anti-Israel protests; that no other overseas conflict brings such a security threat onto a section of British citizens; and that - as with the bizarre Ceuta theory - there is an obsessive, cranky nature to much anti-Israel sentiment. Perhaps this is all a coincidence, but it's unlikely. Rather, the cumulative effect of all this intense anti-Israel activity and commentary contributes, subtly and indirectly, to an atmosphere in which contempt for Jews becomes, for some, acceptable and even encouraged. This is inconvenient for all concerned, but given the alarming state of anti-Semitism in Britain today, it cannot be ignored.

Gadi Eisenkot, the Israeli opposition's leading challenger to Benjamin Netanyahu at the moment, is getting a rude lesson in the cold shoulder awaiting him abroad if he wins in October. Eisenkot's campaign put up a billboard in Cyprus, where Israelis routinely travel. It was vandalized with blood-red paint and pro-Palestinian graffiti. The campaign billboard was a bit unusual, but the backlash quickly turned to the presence of Israelis themselves on Cyprus. "This time it is political propaganda, but it is also becoming increasingly common to see billboards advertising real estate in Hebrew across the island," posted Cypriot politician and European Parliament member Fidias Panayiotou. "This is simply not right. We must defend Cyprus's sovereignty." And now we move from the pretext to the real issue. Israelis not only vacation in Cyprus but have increased their purchasing of homes there. A recent social media trend is to accuse Israelis of "colonizing" the world by vacationing abroad and even-gasp-living abroad. A recent video, including claims of "Zionist territories in the north of Cyprus," has garnered half a million views on YouTube. The complaint here, at its core, is a common one: Europeans expressing their disappointment that Jews are alive and sometimes near them. But Cyprus is an interesting case, because we have enough data to know that it is not, in fact, being colonized by Israelis and therefore the motive for the "sovereignty" freakout is very clearly just pure xenophobia. As one report found, between 2021 and 2025, "Israeli nationals were not the most prominent foreign buyer group.... British nationals led foreign purchases in Larnaca and Paphos, while Russian nationals led in Limassol. Cypriot buyers remained the largest group in every district." Yet the UK and Russia do not face the same "sovereignty" backlash. Wonder why. In fact, the Guardian explained in 2023 that Russians seeking to avoid sanctions had first bought up land on the Cypriot side of the island and then moved on to the Turkish-occupied portion of the country in the north. Now that seems like a genuine sovereignty issue. The Guardian calls Cyprus "Moscow on the Med," replete with descriptions of-yes-Russian billboards: "As in Limassol, where the first oligarchs arrived after the fall of the Soviet Union, Iskele's boulevards are lined with Cyrillic shop signs, billboards promising 'the dream life, luxury car dealerships and cryptocurrency outlets." This isn't just a question of which nationalities are tolerated on Cypriot soil. There is a downside to organizing an economy around foreign purchases of land because it drives up the cost for everyone else. So the anger at Israelis comes from a genuine economic debate, but that debate seems to end in a classic example of scapegoating the Jews. Tel Aviv is 200 miles from Cyprus. London is 2,000 miles. Moscow is 1,500. So the people coming from much farther away are the ones driving up the domestic market. The distance matters in other ways too: If we're talking about buying vacation homes, the Israelis are probably more likely to actually use the property than the Brits. For the local economy, that's far preferable to leaving neighborhoods empty. It's arguably also preferable to renting the homes out from afar, at least from a safety perspective. The above-mentioned 2021-2025 report notes that, according to the Cyprus Central Bank, "Apartment prices rose by 10.8 percent year over year, while home prices increased by 3.0 percent." But prices didn't rise equally across the board. Guess where they saw the highest increase? In the district where Russians were the top foreign buyers. Close behind it was a district where Brits were the top foreign buyers. The Cyprus Mail claims Russians have been flocking to Cyprus for a few reasons: "to preserve capital, relocate businesses, particularly in the technology sector, and secure permanent residence within the European Union."

After deadliest year in decades for Diaspora Jews, task force warns hate is ‘new normal’

Some 23,000 antisemitic incidents were recorded in 2025 in the seven largest Diaspora communities around the world, about 14 percent less than in 2024, according to a new report. However, the antisemitic attacks last year included the murder of 20 people, making it the deadliest year for Diaspora Jewry in more than 30 years, according to J7 Task Force, an organization representing major Jewish communities across seven nations. The countries covered in the report - Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the UK and the United States - comprise over 90% of global Jewry outside of Israel. J7, which was founded in July 2023 to combat rising antisemitism, reported the total number of antisemitic incidents was up 136% in these countries - including a 97% rise in violent incidents - compared to 2022, the year before Hamas launched its devastating invasion of Israel that sparked the Gaza war. "Antisemitism in our seven countries is no longer a surge; it is our new normal," the organization said in a statement. "Governments must stop reacting after Jews are attacked and start acting before, with real security funding, stronger laws and social media platforms that enforce their own rules." Fifteen Jews were murdered at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney, two were killed at Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur, two were killed at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC, and one was killed in Boulder, Colorado. The figure was the highest since 1994, when 85 people - including 67 Jews - were killed in the AMIA bombing in Argentina. "No country can fight antisemitism alone, and this report shows exactly why," said Anti-Defamation League CEO and national director Jonathan Greenblatt, whose organization helped found the J7 Task Force. "This isn't just an American crisis; every single 17 country remains dramatically above pre-October 7 levels. Antisemitism transcends borders, and our response must do so too." Last year, the number of antisemitic incidents rose 5% in the UK, 4% in Argentina, and about 1% in Germany compared to 2024, J7 said. The numbers decreased by 33% in the US, 20% in Australia, 16% in Canada and 16% in France, even as antisemitism became the "new normal," it added. Germany documented 8,725 incidents in 2025, marking a 215% spike over five years. That represented the highest per capita rate in the world, with nearly 70 incidents per 1,000 Jewish residents, as attacks by both far-right groups and far-left anti-imperialist networks surged. Researchers also flagged an accelerating erosion of Holocaust memory and awareness, particularly among younger demographics. In the United States, 6,274 incidents were recorded in 2025, an average of 17 per day. Though the total number of recorded incidents fell 33% from 2024 as anti-Israel university campus encampments petered out, the number of violent incidents actually rose 4% to 203 during the year, the ADL has said. The United Kingdom logged 3,700 incidents in 2025, a 64% increase over five years, according to data from the Community Security Trust. At a rate of 12 incidents per 1,000 Jews, that was one of the highest per-capita rates in Europe, 17 said. Australia recorded 1,654 incidents in 2025, culminating in the horrific Bondi Beach attack, according to data from the Executive Council of Australian Jewry. That represented a 270% surge over five years, the largest increase of any of the seven nations surveyed. In France, antisemitic incidents remained at a "persistently high level," the report said, with 1,320 recorded acts, or more than 3.5 antisemitic incidents per day. The hostile climate has led many French Jews to conceal signs of their identity and question their long-term future in the country, the report said. In Canada, 788 antisemitic incidents were recorded, as Jewish residents were targeted in the vast majority of reported religious hate crimes, despite representing less than 1% of the national population, according to J7. Anti-Jewish hate crime in the country has increased 153% since 2020, the report noted. In Argentina, 713 incidents were documented in 2025, 4% more than in 2024, the report said. Some 62% of all incidents occurred online. Ireland saw a surge in attacks between July 2025 and January 2026. During the period, 143 incidents were reported for the 2,200-person Jewish community, a rate of 65 incidents per 1,000 Jews. Despite the stark numbers, Ireland has yet to develop a meaningful governmental response, with no dedicated policy framework, national strategy or dedicated security funding for Jewish institutions currently in place, the task force said. "In many comparable countries, these are recognized public responsibilities," the report noted. "In Ireland, they continue to rely largely on the efforts of one of Europe's smallest Jewish communities."

It was Saturday night in Grenoble, France, at a municipal festival the city has hosted for 25 years. But the crowd had not come to dance. About 150 people had come to stop her. They blew whistles. They screamed. They threw bottles at the stage. After 20 minutes, the DJ-Jewish, lesbian, a fixture of Parisian queer nightlife-gave up and walked away. The last song she played before she was forced offstage was "Imagine." John Lennon's hymn to a world beyond religion and borders played on to people who had just demonstrated the opposite instinct: Every utopia eventually decides who does not belong. If Barbara Butch's name sounds familiar, it is because this was not the first time she faced the mob. Two years earlier, after the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, she became one of the principal targets of an international campaign of abuse. Then, the outrage came from the Christian right and the reactionary internet. She was denounced as a blasphemer, a desecrator of Christianity, a symbol of civilizational decline. Tens of thousands of insults and death threats followed. That hatred nearly destroyed her. But it had no headquarters. It was a swarm-furious, anonymous, leaderless, dispersing as quickly as it had formed. This time was different. The crowd that came for her in Grenoble called itself antifascist. Its organizers accused her of complicity in "genocide" because she had signed a petition supporting a French bill against contemporary antisemitism. The boycott was called by the local chapter of La France Insoumise (LPI), the party of the French radical left and of presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Allan Brunon, the president of the LFI in Grenoble's municipal council, had called for a "militant blockade" of the concert. LFI militants handed out a leaflet showing Butch spattered with blood, spinning records in front of a Pride flag stamped with a Star of David, captioned Complice du génocide, "Accomplice to genocide"-because she had signed a public appeal supporting proposed legislation to strengthen legal protections against antisemitism, which LFI and other opponents dubbed an attempt at censoring criticism of Israel. Elected officials led the crowd of people decked in keffiyehs who waved Palestinian flags. The next morning, the party's national coordinator Manuel Bompard went on the radio to explain that interrupting the concert was a legitimate act of political criticism.

We were discussing a lecture series called the AKC (Assistantship of King's College), which was to focus on the Israel-Hamas conflict that term. When a description was posted, the first response was, "finally, an attempt to educate the zionists [sic]". Naive as I was, I asked what was meant by that statement, and was met with: "Are we not all pro-Palestine here, or what?" The same person then added: "I would assume to a degree that requires critical thinking, Zionism would be non-existent in our cohort." Stunned by this, I tried to discuss our differing views and have a productive conversation - but I was met with a barrage of abuse as others in the chat joined in. All of a sudden it was almost 100 against one. Some called for me to be removed from the chat entirely. One asked whether there was a "f--ing Zionist" in the chat. Another demanded: "Get them out." A third asked if I was "real" or "computer generated". Then things got even darker. Another student said: "Cant [sic] wait to see you tomorrow Tali." Then asked someone else to "come sort out the zionist". Betraying a degree of self-awareness, one of them said: "If this is bullying, call me the mayor of bully town." They then asked: "Are they going to suspend the whole year minus Tali?" So there I was, an 18-year-old on my first day of university, crying on my bed. I could not understand what I had done to deserve such hatred. The answer, of course, is nothing On October 7, 2024, the first anniversary of Hamas's horrifying attack on Israel, activist students planned a pro-Palestine walk-out to mark "one year of genocide". The fact that 1,200 innocent Israelis were murdered on that day, with more than 250 others taken hostage, did not matter. I am all for freedom of speech and the right to protest. These values are what have made the university experience so special for generations. But there is a time and a place. The staging of such an inflammatory protest a year on from the Hamas attacks was something I could not understand. As the activists went about their business, I stood with fellow Jewish students and others in opposition to their hate-fuelled spectacle. What followed nearly broke me. My phone was blowing up with messages in the English cohort group chat. "B--ch get down," one demanded. Another told me to "get off the pedestal". A third said: "The Zionists are actually everywhere." Then they attacked my character, with one student saying: "I wish Tali would stop, not going to lie, she's so pretentious, artificial and downright disrespectful." But this abuse was not enough for the haters. They wanted me to be kicked off our course too. One said: "If she interrupts the... lecture again tomorrow... she should be thrown out." This prompted another student to add: "As a group we should just band together and carry her out at that point." From then on, most other students ignored me in person but talked about me openly. I left most of my classes in tears. The silence was deafening. That kind of isolation I wouldn't wish on anyone. Nearly two years on, I'm still isolated at this prestigious and historic place of learning. All because I'm a proud Jew who does not hate Israel. My reports to the university authorities about the abuse I have faced have come to nothing. They opened and then closed an investigation, without telling me what action (if any) had been taken. When they were informed about this article, they finally did give some clarity. But their statement is, in my view, full of empty words. A spokesman told The Telegraph: "Following a thorough and fair investigation into this incident, which related to messages sent in a forum that was separate to the university and not exclusive to King's students, we did not find evidence that these messages constituted a breach of our policies that warranted individual misconduct proceedings. "However we acknowledge the hurtful nature of the messages, and reminded our students of the university's conduct policies and charter on maintaining an inclusive and respectful environment, provided ongoing wellbeing support for the student who raised the complaint and encouraged the affected student to report any further incidents to us. "While we have not been made aware of any further complaints, we will always investigate these fairly and thoroughly and act to put in place the right support." The Metropolitan Police, meanwhile, has told me they have "not been able to identify any messages which would be able to prove any offences such as racially aggravated/motivated harassment alarm or distress". The truth is that I have changed as a person. Yes I am prouder than ever about my identity and will say so loudly. But that silence, that pain. It's with me everyday, haunting my every move. When I do try to create new relationships, that split-second thought of "should I tell them?" comes into my head. No one deserves that. Universities preach the importance of talking about mental health but then, in my case and others, do nothing or very little when you are the victim of pure hatred by your classmates. No matter your political beliefs, no person should be told their identity is wrong, that their beliefs don't matter, that they aren't welcome. People often talk about "students" affected by anti-Jewish hatred. But we are not just students, we are people. Young, impressionable, emotional people. But statistics are easier to stomach, so institutions keep us nameless. I am a Jewish student at King's College London, and I refuse to remain a statistic. The anti-Jewish hatred I faced will not remain a statistic. My reality will not become a side-note in a report that is glanced at and forgotten.
