It's not even that I'm advocating for pure socialism. Part of liberty is your own right to step out and start a business if you want to - to shoot for success. You shouldn't attain it through exploitation. There's a lot to be said for a good idea, hard work, and a great product or service.

That American dream can't be for some of us. It has to be for all of us. That's how you pull a nation together. Not with hate, but belief that it's not just possible to live and prosper, but it's likely. Citizens have to live for more than just wage and healthcare enslavement to capitalism.

I got to believe we're going to find ourselves again. Our compassion. Our hope. Our love. Our sense of solidarity. You can't force solidarity with violence. You have to give people something to share and hold onto - a dream, a social contract, opportunity - an understanding of where we each fit.

The saddest part of what's going on in America right now is it didn't have to be this way. There is plenty for everyone, but not enough for too many, and never enough for a few. The wealth of a nation squandered. All we got out of it is this dumb war, raising unemployment, collapsing social systems.
