(🧵 5/7) Their interdisciplinary work integrates biomechanics, ecophysiology, molecular biology and modelling. A decade ago, they uncovered a surprising ability in plants: proprioception, the ability to sense their own shape.

(🧵 4/7) The Tree Integrative Biomechanics team, part of the INRAE–Université Clermont Auvergne joint unit PIAF in Clermont-Ferrand (France), explores how trees stand, bend, and recover under forces like gravity and wind.

(🧵 3/7) This self-sensing mechanism, called proprioception, explains how trees actively control posture and reframes long-standing ideas about reaction wood formation.

(🧵 2/7) Tree shoots do not just orient toward light and gravity—they also sense their own shape. By temporarily switching off light and gravity sensing, Caulus et al. show that poplar stems indeed sense their curvature and actively produce specialized wood to straighten themselves.

🚨 PAPER ALERT 🚨
I’m pleased to share our new paper on proprioception and tension wood formation in trees.
We show that plants sense their shape and orientation to adjust their posture, and propose a new definition of tension wood and its formation.

Enjoy! 🌱

#HelloESR Petit post.
