It’s So Hot That Japan Needs a New Word for It
Japan this week recorded its first kokushobi, a term that means “cruel heat day,” as temperatures reached 104 degrees. It is not the only country that has scrambled for a new summer vocabulary.

And let’s not overlook that wind is ~2x coal and also growing. Texas contains multitudes.
LATEST DATA | Solar power has overtaken coal power in Texas

In the twelve months to March 2026, Texas solar (68.3 TWh) produced more electricity than coal (66.8 TWh).

Just five years ago, coal was still more than 7x larger than solar.

I know I've said this a trillion times but I have to say it periodically to keep from going insane:

The right ran a huge, well-funded, & ultimately successful campaign to completely take over political media & the infosphere more generally. This is by far the most important political development...

"Solemn articles were written about the supposed significance of Greenland, for example, as if Trump’s interest in the Arctic island were not entirely derived from the fact that it looks very large on a Mercator projection."

There is no unifying strategy, plan, or idea. There never has been.

Such Stable Genius, so Greatness and Success.

If Obama had posted even 1/10th of something like this…
Trump: "THEY ARE NOT MAGA, I AM, & MAGA includes not allowing Iran, a Violent Terrorist Regime, to have a Nuclear Weapon... MAGA is about stopping them cold, & that's what we're doing. GOD BLESS OUR GREAT MILITARY, WHICH I HAVE REBUILT SINCE BEGINNING OF MY FIRST TERM, TO ACHIEVE EVERLASTING PEACE"

It's time to call a spade a spade.
Yes, It’s Fascism
Until recently, I thought it a term best avoided. But now, the resemblances are too many and too strong to deny.

This is the thing that utterly vexes me. How do you engage with and counter people, organizations, systems that are so *willfully* stupid?
I just gave my 20yo a rundown of the day's news, and he said, "It's all so dumb, it's hard to take seriously and so it's hard to fight. We'd be better at fighting smarter authoritarians!"

"We'd be better at fighting smarter authoritarians" is going to stick with me.

I swear maybe once a decade in public, and this is the moment. This fucking racist and all the gibbering racists nodding along behind him are the ruination of our country. Our fucking job for the next fucking year is to fucking destroy them in the next election. Fuck them.
Trump, continued: "What the Somalian people have done to Minnesota is not even believable. It’s not even believable. And a lot of it starts with the governor. A lot of it starts with Barack HUSSEIN Obama, because that’s when people started coming in... They want to kiss our country good night."

I have noticed a significant degradation in winds aloft accuracy recently, especially on transcons. I wondered if this was the reason and it seems to be. Not a huge deal by itself but the trend toward less atmospheric observation is disturbing. (gift link)
