wonder how much the careless attitude to language learning in schools has played a part in negativity towards Europe.? The embarrassment of not being confident in another language turned us towards America? We need to make it normal to speak another European language. @theniceman.bsky.social

If you’re reading today’s papers and thinking, did I watch a different Badenoch speech, may I recommend our sanity-restoring review?

“The same people who could not build a railtrack from London to Manchester for £100bn, will build the Kemi Death Star for 10bn. It’s so ludicrous as to be offensive.”

Russia is pursuing a deliberate strategy of terror.

Trying to make daily life impossible for Ukrainians who want to live in peace.

To protect people and infrastructure, Europe is stepping up.

Others must step up their support too.

🚨 In case you hadn’t noticed…

…mainstream media is rapidly getting replaced by alternative and grassroots news efforts.

That’s a combination of citizen frustration with mainstream media - an increased ability to DIY in digital media.

So where is it all going? And how do we ensure standards?

There was no way a pol like Burnham would get on the wrong side of public opinion.

Important however to focus on what was said: the only action was to lay out options in a couple of months.

A lot of questions occur like: why not now?

As long as the Tories are threatening to leave the ECHR, they aren’t a serious party.

Consider it the ultimate red flag. Any party who’d take this entirely unnecessary and ruinous risk with our rights and our country’s security and wellbeing should never get its hands on power.

Ninety years ago today, Oswald Mosley tried to march his Blackshirts through the Jewish East End. 🧵

He had thousands of uniformed fascists behind him and 6,000 police clearing the way. But the people of the East End got there first.

Labour just don't get it. They don't get how scared people are with extreme weather becoming our new normal.

We need voices in parliament that will force them to take wildfires seriously, not quietly shirk responsibility.

Happy #WorldAnimalDay! Do you have a favourite in the Ashmolean?

World Animal Day exists to celebrate animals but also to raise their status and improve welfare standards around the globe. The 4th of October is the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

He sets it off in a busy public street.

Shrapnel flies about hitting cars, homes and a child's bedroom.

It's a miracle nobody is injured.

And Reform MP Sarah Pochin calls his imprisonment "disproportionate" and "two tier justice."

I do wonder what some politicians are scared of ….
Kemi Badenoch condemned Reform's ban on critical journalists covering their conference as "authoritarian", saying her own party would never do the same as "we believe in free speech. We believe in a free press."

Now the Conservatives have banned Byline Times from their conference

The ban comes just weeks after the Conservative leader called Reform's barring of critical journalists from their conference an "authoritarian" attack on the free press

In short, Burnham's speech has not had a big impact.

The position, they say, is that UKG wants broadly speaking full access to the European single market. However:

Therefore before we urge everyone to avoid them we must advocate for an economic system that makes the non processed foods more affordable and/or increase the average person’s affordability. We can’t call the first public health and the second political.

Social Care is affordable in the UK.

Just not Privatised Social Care.

Currently a Social Care Worker is paid £12.60 an hour.

The Council is charged £33.20 an hour.

A huge amount of this is profit which goes completely untaxed.

As you can see this will NEVER be affordable.

This is the center of Kyiv. A civilian building, a historic one, built in the 1850s.

Russian terror knows no bounds. They are attacking and killing Ukrainian civilians just because they can.

If Russia is not stopped, it will expand its terror and violence.
