Knew the last lines of the book already but didn't know the context. Adds a layer to the whole thing. Very very beautiful (and sad). I'll definitely read this book again

"Deux mots, deux murmures accentués par l'âme qui s'envola sur cette parole" Beautiful

"Nasie" : a nickname that could have aged better.

Not a fan of the very long scene with the sisters. However, Balzac knows a thing or two about money

Last pages really showcase one of Balzac's biggest stylistical leitmotivs :"un de ces" ("one of these").
"un de ces regards froidement interrogatifs" / "un de ces hommes capables de ruiner des orphelins.." Many such cases!

The whole adding - rama at the end of words bit is very funny (don't know how it translates into english).
Interesting to see how Vautrin effortlessly moves from one group to another.

Didn't expect Balzac's characters to be this good. Especially the way Mrs Vauquer is described : through the house, through her interactions with the other characters (especially her plot to seduce M. Goriot) and through the narrator's "punchlines".
