A must read thread here -detailing what happens when (mostly past Conservative but now Labour Govt) cut back on the department supposed to collect your tax

Shocking given the state of public finances.

What if Andy Burnham could raise £15bn – without a tax rise?

There's one catch. He'd need to solve the UK’s biggest and least-discussed tax problem.

Almost half of all small business corporation tax isn't being paid - and nobody knows why.

A very amusing man on ITV GMB trying to tell people it was uncouth not to wear a shirt and tie into the office during a heatwave.

I can confirm I'm wearing swimming trunks to work today.

Massive result in Makerfield for Andy Burnham

And this is a great analysis and what looks to be a very accurate constituency poll effort on how he pulled it off.
The first thing to say is a reminder that this should have been a comfortable Reform win. Labour over-performed what national polling says should have been the result by 30-odd points.

This is really very largely down to a unique connection voters in GM have with Burnham.

I don't have many predictions for the English locals tonight but I get the sense that turnout may be quite high in some areas, driven by a large number of competitive parties...but many candidates will win on weirdly low vote shares

Thought for the day...

Instead of starry-eyed love for inequality-generating, far-right-enabling US tech firms, who wealth-extract in the long run, Europe should go harder on them to protect jobs, social cohesion, & firms on high streets - it could be a way to assert independence in the Trump era

This is a shocking indictment both of the civil servants who procured it, and the consultants and engineering/construction firms who cashed in.

This article is bang on. Our struggling high streets, like potholes, a visible sign of decay

The colossal wealth transfer to online giants benefits US tech billionaires and the far right not ordinary people

No.10 may welcome a recent '£40bn investment from Amazon' - the net damage far higher.

Starting the New Year on a positive note, 2026 will see 8 million+ workers receive an improvement to their sick pay. One of many improvements in Labour's employment rights bill.

More to do on, as SSP remains too low, but proud to have worked on this with the Safe Sick Pay campaign
Fantastic to be united with many workers & organisations calling for a rise in Statutory Sick Pay including @mindcharity.bsky.social, @mssocietyuk.bsky.social, Leukaemia Care, @cleanforgood.bsky.social, @organisehq.bsky.social, @younglivesvscancer.bsky.social 🙌

Whilst the NHS is facing a massive winter flu crisis - and flu rips through workforces, some members of the House of Lords are voting to hold up #sickpay rights that most other developed economies take for granted.

Have we forgotten the pandemic? Get on with it.

New research by Best for Britain and YouGov shows: Farage is most vulnerable on the economy.

@pimlicat.bsky.social, CEO of Best for Britain: “Identifying the messaging that is most likely to persuade those Reform voters who remain persuadable is absolutely crucial.”

To remove indefinite leave to remain from people who already have it they'd have to dismantle our entire system of rights legislation and probably end judicial independence.

But they could do that with a majority. They've said they'd do that.

Probably not popular to say it... but this FT piece explains how excessive spending on pensioners is why we are in a fiscal hole. The reality is things like triple lock are unsustainable and causing huge wealth inequalities [link below]

Stewart Lee's sketch 8 years ago remains the best response any public figure has given on the migration debate www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cge...

True public service broadcasting would be for the BBC just to play a bit of it for 'balance' every time they interview a reform politician about immigration
