Students first did a brainstorm using the languages that they knew or were familiar with. Our next brainstorm opened it up to exchange…they talked with friends, used language dictionaries from our collection, and some used Google translate to explore langurs that they were curious about.

I know how I’d adjust for even more collaboration amongst students the next time around. When we had completed the paintings I had a student ask if we could add audio guides for each drawing, just like the book has to accompany it. Next time around, for sure.

It was such a fun project! The curiosity, connections, and exchanges between the students while engaged in this project was so thoughtful.

When students arrive, we do checkout first, talk about flashlight safety, distribute flashlights, and then enter read in the dark for a quick spooky story. Students then have time to read independently, make shadows, and or tell spooky stories.

It’s set up for the week of Halloween. We use our regularly scheduled fixed schedule for elementary (30 min for EC-1, 40 min 2-5).
