I build tools that measure AI’s footprint on the stuff we all pay for. Data centers, water, surveillance pricing, rent algorithms.

What does a county actually get when a data center moves in?
Not the press release number. The real one. After tax abatements, water draw, and grid upgrades on the ratepayer side, the 15-year facility lifespan looks like a 50-year infrastructure debt.
I built DCSI the question.

At 4 a.m., a mother runs out of diapers. The shelf knows. The price changes.

Edition 02 of the Surveillance Pricing Index examines dynamic grocery pricing... and how it falls hardest on people counting every penny.

USDA: bottom 20% spend 32.6% of income on food. Top 20%: 8.1%.

Stop talking about AI job loss like it’s just a math problem. What’s the plan for the paralegal who spent 15 years getting good at something. Really good.…and now it’s a $20 subscription. We have to talk about what happens when your entire professional identity gets commoditized overnight.

San Marcos Texas voted 5-2 to reject a $1.5 billion data center after 100 residents showed up and testified. New Brunswick NJ cancelled theirs and built a park instead.
Neither city is anti-tech. They just wanted a say in what gets built. I love to see elected reps listen to community push back!

My rent went up a thousand dollars the same year I got a raise. They told me it was the market.
Last November the DOJ finished proving it wasn’t. Landlords had been coordinating prices through software called YieldStar.
I bought a house instead. A lot of people can’t.

This is what surveillance pricing actually looks like. You rate a product. The signal hits your profile. Retailers search the file in real time. Same product, different price than the person next to you. FTC documented 250+ companies doing this before the study got killed. Now it runs in the dark.
Multiple times I've found that when I rate a product highly, if/when I decide to buy more, the price has gone up. Sometimes when I haven't even reviewed yet, but the item is popular.
Exactly. FTC found 250+ companies using personal data to set different prices for the same product. That study got shut down. Now your data pays twice: once for the data center that stores it, once for the algorithm that uses it against you. Same company. Both ends of the transaction.

@tampabaytimes.bsky.social Maryland just banned surveillance pricing. Florida’s SB 1746 would have done the same. Died in Commerce and Tourism committee. No coverage. Senator Tracie Davis filed it. Worth a story on why Florida let it die quietly. I can’t find a single Florida news article about it.

ALERT! Pay attention to FISA 702 right now!
It expires April 20 and the House votes this week. This law lets intelligence agencies surveil foreign nationals overseas without a warrant, but it sweeps up Americans’ communications too.

Five days. Watch the vote!

The cycle of AI slop apathy
• Why bother reading anything when it’s all low effort content generated by AI?
• Why bother putting effort into writing anything if it’s just going to be summarized by AI?

No new federal regulator…just industry-led standards. Smells like lobbying with extra steps.
I’m excited about the child safety carve-out, at least we’re showing real bipartisanship here. The rest gives me anxiety.

Are you serious. The NRSC's now generating deepfakes of political rivals?
This is disinformation ops directed at US citizens by their elected reps.
Grandma's not gonna clock a deepfake. She's gonna vote, though.
Disgusting. Ban political deepfakes. Federally.
