Anthropological archaeologist with a penchant for politics. Student of the ancient Maya. Practitioner of slow archaeology. Dad. Probably anarchist. Professional educator, writer, editor, and researcher. Not necessarily in that order.
Sorry. It's exactly what you stated you wanted to see in your pod: Fremen beach landing and being in awe of water everywhere. Pretty intense military-Sicario helicopter vibes. Dope experience, esp. because entirely unanticipated.

"It’s unlikely that the blind poet — who may or may not have even existed — was a committed white nationalist who shared Musk and his ilk’s obsession with European beauty standards developed three millennia after his time."

Have you seen the entire scene from #Dune Part 3 as the solo trailer to The Odyssey in Imax? Truly amazing.

I often think about this.

STOP COMPETITIVE AI GROWTH. That is how AI will destroy the world as we know it. Not following some dumb robot overtake plot. Those kinds of narratives are silly smokescreens.

I'm seeing lots of posts about "the farmers doing this to themselves", or "not yet feeling the squeeze" but in truth, every American depends upon these farmers. In that sense, these farmers did it to every Americans. The double blow of no work force and tariffs may cause a US famine.

This was one of my all-time favourite. As an anthropologist, it's always amazing to hear our perspective portrayed in the media. As I was fully hoping she'd recommend Graeber's Debt, I was elated to hear her recommend it as part of your 3-books bit. Congrats on a fabulous episode, Mr. Klein.

The feedback I get on BSKY is simply mind-blowing. I must be doing this like a pro. 😆

Looking forward to being able to read this one in Canada. I'm wrapping up Podany's "Weavers, Scribes, and Kings", and I'm officially hooked on Mesopotamian epigraphy. The contrast in the records that we have for the Maya world are fascinating.

Regime changes, as liminal periods, are fraught with surprises and dangers.
