Went to Midlands Air Museum today. Oldish chap giving talk inside Vulkan made a remark about how you never got comfort with RAF. I said “unlike the US” he replied “unless you’re in the navy it seems”. Clealry the story has broken out of social media even in the U.K.

It’s just depressing. Further education has been cut to ribbons. Higher education is in crisis. Labour turns its eyes to the bit of the education system which is turning out the highest literacy rates in the western world and goes “that’s the bit that needs to change”

The book is The Continuity Girl. It’s a comic love story set during the Highlands shoot for Billy Wilder’s troubled masterpiece The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. It was doing really well when it suddenly vanished from print. It’ll be a relief to have it out there again.
Well, this is very nice! We very much look forward to bringing this lovely book back into the world. Though hopefully it won’t be anywhere near as much work as being a new dad to twins!

It's fascinating to me how both maths and (classical) music have the same problem of the messy process not being very visible to outsiders so there's a noticeable subset of the population that incorrectly assume when they try it, that it has to be perfect from the get go.

Using disabled people to show other people are nice can minimise their humanity and agency.
This isn't Jude's intent - the way he makes no fuss about this shows that. I'm sure he, and the reporter, would prefer their work together to be the story.

Sort of baffled today. Regardless of the rights and wrongs of closing or not closing your school two weeks ago…. The temps today and tomorrow are the same in much of the country, overnight didn’t drop as low as hoped. So surely same decision today?…. Red warning shouldn’t make any difference

The new ofsted framework was so obviously written on the back of a fag packet it’s amazing that “knowing smoking causes cancer” wasn’t as inspection strand.
