Every time I watch the Kelvin Star Trek movies I am torn at loving the design and look and hating how much it butchers Trek as a concept.
It's a strange experience. I don't like dislike them as films but I don't really think of them as good Trek.

Every time I watch this I get so upset. It's not terrible but it's just not even an adaptation of the original. They just kept the name and the really high level core idea but changes everything else. It waters down the entire point and edge of it.

Been a minute since I saw this last. It's a bizarre film with a weirdly uneven script and performances. The concept itself isn't bad at all, though overly niche. I guess it gets the classic undercover crime story a new facelift throwing in all the surfing.

Once more time to be upset about Magic Arena. Hit Mythic in Standard BO1 two months in a row now. Keep getting matched against people in the Top 500 even though I'm not even numbered. Play the same three hard-counter decks to mine over and over again.

I think this safely places John Woo in my popular directors that I don't really enjoy list. Crappy thing about this is I Still have one more Woo blind watch to go and it's the dumb trilogy itself. Joy.

It was not good. Woo can do action, albeit over the top insanity only. But that's about it. Acting was hammy. Plot was thin. It's meant to be melodramatic but it never builds any emotional core or connections to the characters. Just a boring and cliche plot.

Today's Watch 2: Appleseed (1988)
First time watching this. Interesting setting and good animation. There not a ton of depth though. It's very much more in line with Dominion Tank Police in just assuming you read the comic. Not as cerebral as GitS but fun. 6/10

Today's Watch 1: Big Hero 6 (2014)

I actually kind of hate this. I was tempted to turn it off multiple times. It's over the top but the film craft, choreography and explosions are fine. It's just an absolute turd of a script. It's a loose string of excuses to move to next set piece.

Yesterday's Watch: A Colt Is My Passport (1967)
Enjoyed this. The leads weird jowly look was off-putting, apparently his own choice. Weird. Otherwise it's a pretty solid western with noir undertones. Lot of Leone vibes from the music to shots and plot. Worth checking out. 7/10

Better than The Killer overall but still not great. It has good moments and you can see the kernal of a good film here in elements but there's a lot of random plot threads and bits that don't feel organic or stick enough with the plot. Like the fiance scenes.

Also finished X-Files S3 finally after a long break. It's interesting that I find myself enjoying the MOTW episodes FAR more than the core arc episodes. The "Mythology" I think is how the fandom calls them? Wish those episodes were half as consistent as the high quality MOTW stuff.

Yesterday's Watch: Empire Records (1995)
I remember enjoying this when young. I don't know why. It's... pretty bad. A few good ensemble cast members but there's just no real coherent or realistic story to it at all. It was all vibe and style without any substance. 4/10
