granted, no human being is totally inert and automaton-like. but the "agency trap" comes out very clearly when the author is talking about people who are quite plainly oppressed and frankly lead highly constrained lives

i have some sympathy too because its hard to write about but lately i have also gotten aggravated with humanities writing about "agency"
i think one of the nuance traps is often when you can see that an author is, on some level, aware that the case they are arguing is wrong but they are trying every single trick imaginable to get out of it
i would have to say that the first chapter is more *interesting* but its also wrong and falls into most of the traps Healy talks about here

readers have always been way too forgiving of casual bigotry from intellectuals. and look where we are as a society! should be proof enough that the method doesn’t work.

I’m not going to read anything and skip over the racism to give my assessment. the presence of the racism taints the work. it’s not an isolated thing. it’s not just an element. it informs the writer’s whole point of view. I don’t think of it as just a “blind spot”, not anymore!

This is perfectly compatible with many forms of conservatism! It’s just not the contemporary U.S. right.
Just heard an interview with Nolan and he was talking about the Ancient Greek law of hospitality and how it applies to us now and how society depends on us taking care of each other, and please, tell me about how Nolan is a conservative filmmaker again.
My least favorite Bluesky movie take is “Christopher Nolan is our premier conservative filmmaker” because it is always delivered with a “oh are you triggered by me saying that?” smirk.

You know I used to think the bit in the bad Batman movie where they lure all the cops into the sewers and seal them in was unrealistic but I’m coming round
