Rocky trills, awed. "You respond." It's a statement, not a question, but I can hear the notes of confusion woven into his tone. "Y-yeah," I say. It's a concentrated effort to string words into sentences, but I feel compelled to try for Rocky. "'Course I do. Why…wouldn't I?" "Did not expect. Erid animals no respond to frequency, only react." I feel my lips pull themselves into a lazy smile. "Guess 'm just…special." Rocky makes a few thoughtful clicks, and I feel them in my teeth. "Hmm. Have other theory," he hums. "You intelligent life, like Eridian. You larger than Eridian, but soft and leaky. Have similar thinking capabilities, but no carapace. Simple result; human cannot protect brain from Eridian predation tactics." I nod minutely. "Good theory." After a few seconds, his words actually seem to sink in for me. "Wait. Predation?"

this piece depicts the following scene from the fic: “This caused a rise in the chitter, as more skittered closer as well. Savior Grace, yes, savior Grace, tell us of them! they all chirped. And how could Rocky deny them? He could talk about Grace without end, and now, surrounded by his family, he wanted nothing more than to convince them to love Grace, too. It was then, as he told the stories of how they’d met, how they’d worked to solve the astrophage problem, how they’d nearly died, how they’d departed and how Grace had turn around to save him, did something finally settle within Rocky. It was probably temporary, this sense of contentment, but speaking of Grace to his family was akin to having him here, and nothing had ever felt so right. Maybe trying to force his old home to fit would never work, and instead, he’d have to bring his new home with him.”
