You've seen fireworks that look like jellyfish, but what about a jellyfish that looks like fireworks?

The E/V Nautilus filmed this rare Halitrephes maasi jellyfish glowing like a firework at a depth of 4,019 feet (1,225 meters) off the coast of Baja California, Mexico.

Discoverability for new SFF books seems way down these days, especially outside of bestsellers and certain subgenres. I'm noticing this as both a reader and a writer. Great stuff is in danger of sinking without a trace.

Please post about new/recent books you love or are excited for!!! I'll start:

We have a decade of research that says this is a bad idea. Beyond that, we have a decade of research that says this will absolutely fuck over marginalized folks.

'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)

I highly approve. Social science core classes at UChicago were amongst the ones that taught me the most in terms of analytical skill, disciplinary breadth, and complex thinking.

All of which are next to impossible to cultivate when outsourced to sparkling autocorrect.
All social science core classes at the University of Chicago will transition to an “analog” approach for the upcoming academic year, restricting in-classroom technology use and banning AI-assisted writing and grading for students and professors

I once worked at a university that gutted an entire (very popular and useful) learning center and replaced it with two guys who would teach you how to host blogs. every student had to have a blog. Every single one. Our syllabus had to mention blogs. We had to teach WITH blogs.
I cannot begin to count the amount of technology tools I have been told in the last 20 years that I need to teach my students how to use because they were the future.
95% of them are gone.
A tool is a tool.
there is no rhyme or reason to an entire “AI” department, much less an AI school. There is no curriculum, as such, because AI is not a school of thought. It has no theory, no method. It’s just a tool. Two or three courses, max, if someone is obsessed with it should suffice.

It will never not disturb me how fast the country went from “gambling is a dangerous vice that must be contained in Las Vegas if at all possible” to “everyone should be able to lose their life savings by using their pocket phone if they so wish.”
federal law *used to* ban sports betting throughout much of the country

but in 2018, the Supreme Court struck that law down, freeing states to partner with the gambling industry to profit off their vulnerable residents

Americans are now paying the price

How the Supreme Court Kicked Off America’s Sports Betting Addiction Crisis
Like many things in this country, the omnipresence of DraftKings and FanDuel is largely the Supreme Court’s fault.
