New Topster!!!

A collection of artists I've been getting into over the past year or so, 2 per artist. 😊

Some I've only heard 2-3 albums from so far, others I've dived deeper into. Chart is unordered.
Beautiful live album. Honestly wasn’t all that convinced to give it a listen until I saw a lot of the buzz around it and it was very much warranted. Absolutely love all of the new tracks and the takes on older ones, for the most part, feel even more powerful despite the… [1/2]

Wanted to give this a listen before getting to the new album they dropped. It’s very solid, maybe a bit less adventurous than I’d hoped for but I anticipate that the follow-up will be a lot more satisfying on that front. That said, I like the choice in sound on this… [1/2]

Gave this a revisit since I did mildly enjoy it when I first heard it but never really came back to it afterwards. A lot of the moments I initially felt were underwhelming improved a good bit this time around. It’s one of those albums that I think fits a particular mood… [1/2]

This was literally everything I was hoping clipping. could be when I heard, and felt somewhat underwhelmed by, their self-titled album. Production is damn near flawless and I LOVE the way they went about using horror films as a major influence, especially when it’s… [1/3]

Had a great time with this, definitely a first listen highlight of the month so far. It’s a crazed and off-kilter mix of both noise-rock and dance-punk with a ton of dissonance and lumbering grooves. I feel like I’d gain a LOT from more listens which I am very excited to do!!! :D

Another year since my favorite album of all time was made 🥳❤️
On this date in 2000, Godspeed You Black Emperor! - 'Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven!' was released.

📈 #2 for 2000, #14 overall

Honestly there really isn’t much I can point to that’s an actual critique of the album besides that I think the closer is definitely a tough sell, but even still I don’t think I was in the right mood for it. I haven’t really been in the mood for metal for a… [1/2]

I’d been seeing what Brian Chippendale has been doing on Instagram for a minute now and I thought it was sick, little did I know he had his own solo project and this album caught my eye given its obvious similarity to the art on Lightning Bolt’s Earthly Delights. It’s… [1/2]

It’s a pretty straightforward album on a lyrical front and its instrumentation and vocals definitely still take a lot from classic rock, similarly to The Woods later down the road, but it still ends up being a very entertaining album. I think I slightly prefer The Woods… [1/2]

I remember seeing posts of this being the “heaviest album ever made” and realizing now it was either bait or they just don’t listen to anything that heavy. That said, the album’s pretty sick and I enjoyed it a lot. I wish some of the progressions were slightly more… [1/2]

I’m really glad I checked this out. There’s a ton of unexpected ideas on display, some pan out and some don’t, though all of which are placed into a pretty insightful track list that shows the progression of Unwound’s sound, a band I’ve only been falling in love… [1/2]

Really enjoyed this one! It’s a great take on dance-punk with a ton of really catchy leftist lyrics. The instrumentation is pretty stripped back on a lot of tracks but in spite of that the band still exudes a ton of energy through sharp vocals and witty song ideas. Good stuff! :D

Generally I don’t think it’s quite as interesting as either of AOL’s full-length albums and the spoken word vocal sample on “Lkj” overstays its welcome a bit but this is still a pretty great precursor to 2012-2017, I quite enjoyed “Trouble Rooney” and “For Kennedy” :)

Posting this at 2am because I completely forgot to earlier

This was another very enjoyable album from Oneohtrix Point Never. I maybe don’t love it quite as much as Replica or Tranquilizer, largely due to some of the MIDI vocal synths he uses, but still a great record! :)

With time I think the vocal mixes (and some mixes in general) leave a bit to be desired but I honestly still quite enjoy the way the band entirely reinvented themselves on this album. It’s distinctly more lo-fi than previous releases and takes a lot more from post-rock… [1/2]

Never heard of Disco Inferno until this past week, and this album of theirs is definitely an interesting one. It’s a lot more repetitive and ambient than I would’ve thought it to be, and the choice to mix in elements of post-punk, particularly in the bass playing, and… [1/2]

Don’t feel all that strongly about it but I’d say my feelings are mostly positive. The intro and the last like 3-4 tracks definitely drag more than I’d like and the deep cuts generally range from ok to quite good. Favorite tracks off first listen were… [1/2]

First Listen Chart for September!!!

Got into New Order a good bit this month, I wouldn’t normally expect it to be my thing but Power, Corruption, and Lies is honestly fantastic. Can’t really say much of anything was all that weak either, great month! 😊

Another fantastic Mahavishnu Orchestra album. First leg feels even more abrasive than most of what’s on The Inner Mounting Flame which was really cool. I still might enjoy how dynamic their debut is a tad more but still, incredible album. Loved it!!! :D

It was a bit annoying trying to sort out the files for this and getting them to work as I wanted BUT I’m glad to say it was a pretty worthwhile inconvenience as this album was very fascinating. My exposure to a lot of the No-Wave scene is pretty limited but I’ve been… [1/3]

Great emo and post-hardcore album! The band’s got a knack for melody and guitar work. Nothing all that crazy or inventive for the genre(s) but just super solid execution and a ton of fantastic songs from start to finish. Really enjoyed it!!! :D
