But when a person loves you correctly - what they see is you pushing them away because you’re not putting in the same effort or being the same person they fell in love with. You’re isolating and abandoning them during times they need you the most.

You avoid arguments and you don’t want to talk about it because you’re afraid to say or do something that’ll push them away. BUT You let them believe you don’t care if they leave because you’re trying to protect yourself.

When you’ve only experienced abandonment in your life, you start to think that what you have is too good to be true and it’s only a matter of time before they leave too. Then you start to make yourself smaller so that you’re not too much for them in the hopes that they’ll stay.
