When you think about the Labs' weird approach to software releases (sudden changes, bad communication), it is worth remembering that a core belief is that these products are a temporary thing they have to do to raise money for a couple years until "true" AGI makes all products obsolete.

Local LLMs are like democracy and hosted LLMs are like central planning
Here’s an opinion that’s going to make everybody mad: local LLMs are like cars and hosted LLMs are like trains
Altman is right that local inference is inefficient. The thing is there are reasons other than efficiency for local inference. Seeing a lot of nonsensical blabbering from both sides of the fence on this one.

I don't really want OpenAI and Anthropic to own all the compute. I think that's a bad equilibrium.

I also think it's comically stupid for large groups of people to run giant servers at home -- power, transmission.

Gains to scale are real.

An engineer in my network that I (too) briefly had the pleasure of working with put this cozy bonsai together. I feel like my corner of the Atmosphere might appreciate/enjoy it?

There's a good book about this in general: Complexity by M Mitchell Waldrop

All code is part of a random Cambrian explosion of complexity, and the outcomes we've experienced so far are just one way of doing things. Don't over index on what's come before or you'll be stuck with local maximums
It just bounced around like a Brownian state machine seeking a lower energy state. Every call checked random predicates on self before (usually) handing off to another method. Obvious "bugs" were load bearing parts of the control flow, since it expected to first process the data incorrectly.

TLDR on the kimi k3.1 pro benchmarks (just released) is that it looks like they figured out their RL, where the initial release was a very impressive base model with lighter post-training. China is very much keeping pace with capability gains.

If you make HTTPS requests or have other TLS clients and care about MITM attacks, you need to update today.

If you run Go:

go get [email protected]

If you run Homebrew:

brew update
brew install ca-certificates

If you run Linux, maybe stay off the internet for now.
🚨 Six WebPKI Intermediate CAs are compromised.

This is bigger than Heartbleed, but a client-side issue.

Anything that verifies certificates against public roots, like most TLS clients, is/was affected.

I at this point am like 90% convinced that reusable/shareable skills packages are a bad thing for LLM users. The 10% is that it can show you what's possible; the 90% is that people want to be incurious and just slap something in
