i always come back to this dialogue as a little microcosm of the show's thesis. it sounds like stede is saying something ridiculously naive and stupid that's going to get everyone killed and by the end you see he was 100% right. getting rid of gunpowder to make room for marmalade was the right call.

Someone's screenshot of a two-post twitter thread, from user blue (@bluewmist): the fastest way to kill motivation is to make your identity depend on the outcome. it's called ego involvement. when failing becomes failing as a person, your brain starts avoiding the whole thing. not because you don't care, but because you care too much. you don't need lower standards. you need less self-worth tangled up in your goals. the work gets easier when it's not about proving who you are.

I don't think Zheng was giving Stede enough credit. He was very smooth, taking his sword out of that guy at the same time as taking his gun. He shot and sliced two guys without even stopping, and made a cool little twirl. He WAS incredible, babe.
