Reinterpreting the Recurrence Time–Moment Relation of Global Repeating Earthquakes: A Scattered Data Cloud Bounded by Crack‐Model Physics
Long-term quasi-periodic repeaters from latest global catalogs reveal a triangular data cloud rather than a simple power law The 1/3-slope lower bound reflects ruptures under long-term loading wh...

Dear colleagues,

I would like to highlight an upcoming AGU26 late-breaking session, S030, focused on the recent 2026 Venezuela earthquake sequence:

The 2026 Venezuela Earthquake Sequence: Insights from Seismology and Beyond
In June 2026, a large, complex earthquake sequence struck north-central Venezuela along the boundary between the Caribbean and South American plates, a right-lateral strike-slip fault system that had ...

NASA-ISRO SAR (NISAR) satellite imaged Venezuela June 25. NISAR SAR interferometry (InSAR) enabled calculation of surface displacement. Displacements have red tones for east and blue tones for west, with white in middle near-zero over fault rupture. Fault ruptured far to east under ocean. #venezuela

Made a first-motion focal mechanism for the M7.2 Venezuela earthquake. Seems consistent with the initial rupture fault shown by InSAR.

A replot of the latest aftershock locations from FUNVISIS (Jun-26 night, California). It seems that there is a gap between the east rupture and the west rupture.

One needs a Python script to download the catalog, using the link that the browser uses.

I can see a fault bend/gap story emerging from the discussion I had with colleagues about why the USGS reports two events (M7.2 → M7.5). Maybe there is a fault bend or gap between the west rupture (M7.2) and the east rupture (M7.5)?

Here is an iPad schematic:

Composite plot of the two coseismic interferograms (Sentinel-1, from Copernicus) with the USGS epicenters of the two earthquakes and faults from GEM. The shoreline San Sebastián fault lines up with the fringes in the west and is probably the fault responsible.

First Sentinel-1 interferogram from southern Kamchatka! Lots of what I am assuming are tropospheric signals (e.g. over the volcanoes), but I also see long-wavelength fringes that change in azimuth from the NE (~shore-perpendicular) to the SW (~shore-parallel). Optimistic it could be the earthquake!

Quickly plot the rough location of the 2025 Mw8.8 Kamchatka earthquake (USGS hypocenter) on Figure 1 in Pinegina et al. (2018). I wonder if the 2025 event re-rupture the northern rupture of the 1952 Mw9.0 event? Also, did the 2025 event rupture across the "segment boundary" at ~N53?
