My Genre Grapevine report on "AI and the Enshittification of Life" is out. I spent a year wading through the slop of generative artificial intelligence to show what happened with the programs in 2024, how they affect artists and writers, and where we go from here. 1/2 www.patreon.com/posts/ai-and...

Lake sturgeon is one of ~27 species in the sturgeon family (Acipenseridae), a group dating back to the Cretaceous. Like gars ( #GarWeek), sturgeon are sometimes called “primitive” because the way they look today is almost unchanged from fossil records dating back millions of years #25DaysofFishmas

They trained an AI model on a widely used knee osteoarthritis dataset to see if it would be able to make nonsensical predictions - whether the patient ate refried beans, or drank beer. It did, in part by somehow figuring out where the x-ray was taken.

AI thought X-rays of your knees show if you drink beer—they don’t.

I suppose this is why so many authors are incensed about AI “writing” — it’s clearly just something tech dullards created to compensate for their own weaknesses and now they’re projecting that on all of us.

Look, I’m sorry you suck at writing. But don’t make the rest of us suffer your failures.
Writing is thinking.

It’s not a part of the process that can be skipped; it’s the entire point.
This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.

Hello Bluesky. I understand the password is a cat and an artistic statement. This is Luna, and like me she believes that all art is political, even art that consciously tries not to be. Because it’s a political choice whose stories we tell and whose we choose to receive.

This is a story of how a snail turned from a freeloading roommate into a clingy parasite.
