Make your characters more ugly. Just a bit more ugly. A crooked eye or eye bags, a few wrickles, messy (not pretty) hair. Non-typical aesthetic proportions. Ugly fashion.
It makes them so much more lovable and unique.

I'll never understand people who talk of fraternizing with supremacists on the fascist bird app simply because its 'more exciting' like as if its a good thing.
