I later marched on Washington for the ERA, and there she was again, speaking in front of the nation's capital. My mom subscribed to MS Magazine from day 1.

Gloria and Larry both spoke, answering questions from the packed audience. I remember nothing of Larry's comments, but Gloria moved me. I became an instant feminist at like 13 years old.

I remember a particular cover with a bright blue background, showing the lower half of a woman inserted upside down into a meat grinder, her gorgeous legs bent in a sexy pose with high heels on her feet.

The most amazing thing was, the church actually had framed covers of hustler magazine hanging throughout the sanctuary for the event, allowing us to see for ourselves how women were portrayed by Larry's publication.

I met Gloria when I was in middle school back in the mid 70s. First UU Church in Columbus, OH invited her and Larry Flynt to speak on a panel about pornography. Both came to the church for the event.

Thankfully, it never got beyond that level of ickyness, and eventually my spidey sense kicked in enough to make me stop visiting his office.

At that age, I was not in a place where I was capable of seeing this for what it was. I needed affection and approval, and he played on that need.

Has nothing changed? When I was a student at Ohio State in the 80s, our student ombudsman would regularly close the door and pick me up and put me on his lap. He was a white-haired, grandfatherly figure to me, so I allowed it while at the same time feeling super weird about it.

He's my governor and we love the guy, but this is exactly why he shouldn't run for president.
