I'd guess they would do the same as exists now (at Lake & Hennepin), but it would just shift the southbound diagonal bike crossing to be at 31st & Hennepin instead of Lake

Sounds like the data center was the highest bidder. That's just the economic reality when shopping is online, work is remote, and large lawns are the preference...
It's sadly ironic that data centers are infilling urban spaces, while Met Council lets suburban homes sprawl into the exurbs.

Bryant is my favorite street on which to wipe out on a bike. I have a hole in my shirt because I zoomed down the new off-street trail when it was half-built (that's kind of on me lol) but there were no barricades

I'd guess downtown is quite convenient for existing infrastructure access - electric, transmission, & water, built to serve offices that no longer exist. The pipes are there, but the workers left.
Not that I'm defending data centers, but wrangling with why it does make economic sense.

It might make sense from a smart management of resources perspective. Given that downtown's already well-connected to the grid, it would be more environmentally costly to run transmission lines to a remote/rural data center

those are some narrow streets! 7’ or 8’ maybe plus parking? I’m jealous. We could save so many trees if we built our streets to that small width.
