Words have consequences. When Aotearoa signed up to climate action and then this gov't refuses to lift a finger or u-turn on climate action, it must have consequences. This time it's trade & foreign policy implications. The real world consequence is more flood, more emergencies in the future. #nzpol

I actually can't believe that Luxon said "cry me a river" in response to cost of living crisis. Until I look it up on Hansard. Yep Luxon actually said it. Talk about being out of touch with reality. #nzpol

I find it ironic that only in Trump's America will he allows AI to run unchecked. Kiss his ass or bribe him enough, he will let you do anything. Whereas in an authoritarian regime like PRC or Russia, unchecked AI is as much a threat to its power as a dissident. Of course rogue AI got shut down.

National's narrative is about tax, but tax pays for the nice things that we ALL need, like CRL, or public health system. These are investments into future. Nobody should be afraid of talking about more tax if it pays for investments that will yield decent returns. Low tax = low investment. #nzpol

With EDs overflowing with people and student nurses who can't get a job in NZ, public healthcare should be one of the top election issues. Under Nat/NZF/ACT things will get even worse with more cuts. Only a change in government will reverse the trend. #nzpol

"Better starts now" is on par with "eat shoots and leaves" in terms of ambiguity. What does it really mean? "Better, starts now [with Labour]" or "Better starts, now [with Labour]" i.e. just having a better start? How do any of these interpretations help to sell Labour's politics anyway? #nfi #nzpol

Why is RNZ posting click-bait article? DO NOT BUY $50 coffee if you cannot afford it! There is el cheapo alternative. Caffeine is caffeine, even from the cheapest instant coffee. 🙄
Why are we paying $50 for instant coffee?
Instant coffee creeping past $50 for a jar is a symptom of wider pressure on coffee prices, economists say.

I agree that there is a real threat from PRC. Hell I will always be the first one to give PRC the middle finger. However it is so easy for "caution" to become witch hunt, by looking at every Chinese living in New Zealand with suspicion. #nzpol /1

@keithng.bsky.social BUT as long as HK is allowed breathing room/"freedom" for mutual benefit of Hong Kong and PRC, status quo could have continued. And if it doesn't work, people would just leave, like before 1997, like it is now. Just like NZers leaving for AU. People vote with their feet. /2
August 21, 2026 at 6:27 AM
@keithng.bsky.social continuing the thread directly, I absolutely loathe the things CCP are doing to Hong Kong, and local "collaborators" kowtowing. But HK independence or crying to abusive parent UK isn't the solution. Status quo worked, testing boundary of that status quo will bring friction. /1

The thing with "lone gunman" Chris Penk is that even if it is true, no one believes that. And no one who knows the truth will talk (esp. Penk himself to not burn his bridge), at least up until the election. Afterwards, it is open season. For truth I mean. 😉 #nzpol

IMO Luxon's slap on Winston's wrist with a wet bus ticket (Gen Z, look up wtf is a bus ticket) is because Luxon is terrified of Winston, and simply can't stand up to him. Whereas Lawrence did stand up to Winston. And we are supposed trust Luxon's leadership, when he can't even condemn a racist? 🙄
