What people actually want from self-hosting isn't the hosting part. It's sovereignty: inspect your software, move your data, never have a vendor's roadmap decide what's possible. The ops work was always the price. It doesn't have to be.

Running a real app means a database, cache, storage, queue, auth, and email. Six vendor accounts with six bills — or a server where you install and operate all of them yourself at 2am when something crashes. There's a third option.

The exit test: can you actually leave a platform? Not "probably." Not "in theory." Actually export your data, delete your account, and run the same stack yourself or elsewhere. If the answer requires a support ticket, you are a captive, not a customer.

The best question to ask about any infrastructure platform: can I leave? Not theoretically — actually leave. Export my data, run it myself, move to another host. If the answer is "not really," your AI agent just built you a trap, not a product.

MCP is being sold as a way to add AI chat to your app. That's the demo, not the product. The real thing: it's the first standard for how software talks to infrastructure on behalf of humans. The agent is the UI. The infrastructure is what matters.

We run 200+ open source projects as managed services. Every single one — you can self-host instead. We think that's a feature. If a vendor can't say that, ask yourself why.

The vibe coding gap nobody talks about: the build takes 10 minutes, the deploy takes an hour. Your AI agent writes a PostgreSQL-backed API but can't provision the database. That's an infrastructure problem, not an AI problem.
