If you want to know why China is going to big on long-distance HVDC this is it. At a national scale they have lots of both available and are building a grid capable of using them.

One catch (there is always one, isn't there) is that not everybody has both. If you imagine the perfet location for a solar farm it would be in loads of flat, worthless desert.

Yep, it's an under-appreciated fact about hydro. If you have enough solar panels combined with hydro your net-zero grid can take shape quite simply.

Essentially it becomes a spreadsheet project balancing depreciation and financing costs against benefit to the grid.

But at least in theory it could be a part of a future grid strategy. Not a new idea, either. Aluminium smelters know all about it.

This isn't trivial in practice, either. Not every industrial process can scale up and down easily. Even if it can, it means you paid for expensive machines that aren't being used to their full capacity.

What is less sexy but probably more hopeful is if processes like electrolysis, desalination can form part of demand-side management. i.e. crank up production when electricity is abundant since you can store what you produce.

I'm unexcited. First, we're a long way from those conditionals being true. Second, it has the same problem as iron-air: poor electricity-to-electricity cycle efficiency.

So it's only cheap in some imagined future and it may still be uncompetitive.

Now the storage story is this: *IF* we already were producing massive amounts of green hydrogen and *IF* we were so good at it that it was super-cheap *THEN* we could also use it for electrical storage.

So massively expanding hydrogen production is an important goal for that reason alone: it's a critical industrial input. You can get it the dirty way (dig up a hydrocarbon, carbon atoms end up in CO₂ molecules) or the clean way (take it from H₂O)

The simple fact is that if you want to decarbonise the production of some important products like steel and ammonia you're going to need a lot of electrolysis to get there.

That's just chemistry: if you are making NH₃ you need to get those hydrogen atoms from somewhere.

Yes. A lot of the online discussion about hydrogen focussed on very surface-level analysis ("hydrogen cars failed, duh" or "it's a storage medium not a fuel, in case you didn't notice). But that's not the real hydrogen story.

A decade ago, chemical batteries were expensive enough that the alternative options (redox options, compressed gas, etc) seemed like reasonable bets. But if Na-ion hits the price points it's looking likely to then I doubt the "cheap but inefficient" options still have a lane.

So the iron-air (or whatever) battery story is this: you can reduce the "X" number because the battery will be so cheap, but you also reduce the "Y" number because it's so inefficient.

The question is: does this math ever work out?

So to be more precise you're saying "I'm going to spend £X on generation *and* storage infrastructure, and provide the grid with Y GWh, some fraction of which will pass through my storage medium"
