In my view, this is bad. Authors share a common budget with their readers. You either work to make your writing clear or you shift the burden onto the reader to work out what the hell you meant. I think most would agree that you do your reader a disservice by expecting them to do most of the work.

I did a somewhat deep dive into the recent OpenAI and Anthropic "hacks" for an upcoming interview.
IMO, the AI companies are better off running with the "rogue AI" story because the real story is actually pretty embarrassing.

we really need a way to talk about entities that are narrative-shaped (text elementals, jpeg-artifacted reasoning-capable shards of the akashic library, whatever) that acknowledges how weird they are without papering that over with the implication that they're just little guys inside the computer

This remains a relentlessly stubborn myth about native North American warfare despite the evidence pointing quite loudly the other way.
Often the problem here is failing to distinguish between the 'battle' - sometimes fairly performance - and the raid or ambush, where the killing mostly happened.

My impression is that some Native American tribes did a lot of raiding but that it was often intentionally nonlethal. I’m sure that some folks got killed anyway, but that seems different from setting out on a raid for the purpose of killing.
