July was an excellent month for reading. Who suggested I read the Vlautin? Wow! The Garrick year felt dated even to old me. Mothering Sunday beautiful- read in one sitting. Beloved is incredible and a traumatic read.

Longest read that occupied me from May to June was Midnight’s Children but my tenacity and engagement was rewarded. Heat and Dust a contrast as discussed in the Booker Posh Bingo discussion by @backlisted.bsky.social on Patreon. Hild was a slog. How to build a boat a refreshing change.

In May and June most of my reading was prompted by @backlisted.bsky.social sourced from charity shop, library, Audible, Kindle and a dramatisation of Hotel du Lac on BBC Sounds.

Looking back over recent months’ reading: April benefited from @backlisted.bsky.social new Backlisted Readers’ choices. I also loved my daughter-in-law’s brilliant YA novel in verse

I am in awe of this woman who rides a similar bike to mine. How has she conquered one of the toughest climbs in the Tour de France. Reader, I donated.
Extraordinary day supporting 84 year old Ann Jones scaling Alpe d’Huez in support of @amostrust.bsky.social’s work in #Gaza, and riding with two of the Gaza Sunbirds Paralympic team.
Truly inspirational 🙌🍉🇵🇸🙏

A wonderful thread on Persuasion. My favourite JA novel and my favourite adaptation
In part inspired by @bakerdphd.bsky.social, but fully driven by my own Austen-mania, I'm about to watch the Root/Hinds Persuasion (1995), an artful, thoughtful adaptation of my favorite Jane Austen novel. It is not quite so lovable as P&P; it has edges, and conscience, and true melancholy. Beautiful

In March I revisited the Inheritors and Offshore. Loved Elidor, terrified by Death of Grass and drunkenly lurched between reading and listening to Under the Volcano. Thank you @backlisted.bsky.social

Bit late to say this is what I read in February. All were rewarding, I needed Audible to get through the Evenings. Absolutely loved The Safekeep

January was rubbish for cycling but excellent for reading. Rounded off the month with Iris Murdoch. How have I not read her until now? Thanks to @backlisted.bsky.social for prompting this with another excellent podcast.

I very much enjoyed this. Loved Charlotte’s imagined love life. Sadly, she has sacrificed her life for others. Thank you to @backlisted.bsky.social and many others for suggesting it.
A bit disappointed with the wrinkled scuffed copy that World of Books listed as very good £6.60

I have been rootling through my shelves to find a TBR selection for the new year . Couldn’t decide where to start - then - On the Calculation of Volume arrived. I consumed it in one day (appropriately). Beautifully written, unsettling, so much to think about.

Last year I enjoyed reading more Brookner: Providence, Family and Friends and the truly superb Latecomers. And Eleanor Bron was the perfect voice for Falling slowly

This is incredibly good. I’m trying to read more slowly as I near the end. Thanks to @backlisted.bsky.social for introducing me to Joan Barfoot. Out of print, I think, but found in Oxfam.

These have arrived! - the finished, hardback copies of a little book I've written about the joyfully unpredictable experience of producing Father Ted.
Publication is Feb 20th but I'd like to give away two copies early - RT by Saturday 6pm and my dog Watson will pick the winners.
