In Hong Kong, Chow Hang-tung is a political prisoner who refuses to live by lies. A brave and great woman, she is. I begin my column today with her and move on to our own United States.

JD Vance keeps feeding stories to the NY Times about how he's the only one in the Trump admin who knows the Iran war is a disaster.

It isn't going to work. The war will be an anchor tied to him when he runs for president in 2028.

Hong Kong is off the front pages. The city is now an "ordinary" Chinese city -- unfree, totalitarian. But remember its political prisoners, including Jimmy Lai and Joshua Wong. I have written a piece on the latter. He turns 30 next month. A great man. www.thenextmove.org/p/remember-h...

To get a measure of Chow Hang-tung, read this 2022 (but still relevant) piece.

"Yiu-Leung Cheung, a barrister at Harcourt Chambers, where Chow was working when she was arrested, says jail time doesn't scare her. "Her real fear is the whole world becoming indifferent to this increasing abuse"."

Yeah, the Taiwanese (especially young Taiwanese) do NOT want to become part of China!

They can see what happened to Hong Kong and they don't want that experience repeated in Taipei.

The biggest fallacy in international commentary on Hong Kong's national security law is the notion that the anti-ELAB protests caused NSL. The truth is that NSL was the culmination of the exact process the protests were calling out.
It’s why I point out to folks not familiar with HK that the 2019 pro-democracy uprising was the culmination of 30 years of anger, and at least 20 years of protests. And how because HKSARG was so unresponsive you get from 5% of the population marching to >25% showing they hate the government’s guts

The thing is, even within the lifespan of the mainstream internet, things used to work a LOT more smoothly

That was one of the huge arguments FOR mainstreaming the internet

Now nothing is smooth. It’s crammed full of monetized barriers between user & task to boost stats & keep eyeballs locked in
I think about this essay a lot.

About the low-level stress & aggravation literally everything is now designed to incite & maintain.

What this constant emotional histamine response to our digital-logistical environment does to us, how it degrades our days.
