The reason young people vibe with liminal horror is that the wealthy have spent the last half century destroying all anthropological spaces they can exist in, leaving *only* non-places

This is literally it.
It's hard to convey that you can be fatalistic about the time you live in and the ability to achieve change in relative time frames while still believing that working towards something you may not see in your lifetime is still worthwhile and meaningful.

My latest is a hard reality check about the absolute abyss between the gentry-marketed "recovered" Asheville and the actual, struggling city most of us live in.

Evictions restarted before the water was even back on and city hall's far more obsessed with spying on locals than aiding them.
Two years after Helene, we are still two cities

The second anniversary of the storm sees a deeply divided city, between struggling communities still surviving the crises and an elite that's made the aftermath far, far worse.

Seeing "trans kids given deadline to segregate themselves" and "trans women banned from yet another part of society" headlines *every single day* while everyone you know and every organization stays breathtakingly silent takes such a damn toll on your heart.

Sitting on the login screen, doomscrolling on my phone... And i get the whispered "pssst, wake up"

Y'all are too funny and DEEPLY aware of your audience LOL

(I logged in, thank you for breaking the doomscroll lol)

There's a hideous and despicable irony in that, when in in my regular everyday construction-tran outfit, nobody even looks at me... But when i get all dolled up for Halloween i suddenly become intimidatingly and unapproachably hot.

I truly can’t imagine the person I would be, the art I would’ve made, the choices I might’ve made, the wide-open vistas that might exist in my brain if the constant anxious horror of the last 10 years in America wasn’t just 24/7 squatting its horrible carcass on every cell of it.

Me (34, ADHD) and someone's granddad (63, Early Alzheimer's) on the jobsite just vibing, running conduit, blissfully unaware of anything that happened before lunchtime.
(Neither of us has any decent short term memory lol)

Did trans people in Russia go too far?! Or is state mandated elimination of trans healthcare a unifying theme in illiberal authoritarian countries?

It's the latter.

“if you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares ba—“

actually when youre trans the abyss just stares at you regardless. plus it’ll take swipes at you when you arent looking so you gotta have eyes on that fucker at all times
a lot of cis people seem to respond by saying "well just don't look at the news" or "well stop doomscrolling" as if we share the luxury of being able to put our heads in the sand when our friends and loved ones are forced to make impossible choices.

we're going to win though. cat's out of the bag.

it doesn't help either that cis people continually make the endless battery of transphobic policymaking about themselves, say we're exaggerating, call us hysterical, etc etc. on a personal level i am the happiest and most fulfilled i have ever been all while society gaslights me about my oppression.
i don't think most cis people know what it's like for every fun or happy or meaningful moment you experience to be overshadowed by some tragedy affecting your fundamental personhood in some way within 48 hours on either side of it

everyone needs to call it what it is. and any cis person who says trans people are "overreacting," "distracting," or "taking away from the fight against fascism" is complicit.
The United States is committing genocide against its trans population, and SCOTUS just legalized it.

That's the truth.

The NYT's anti-trans fear mongering was cited in a Supreme Court briefing that stripped away the rights of trans kids. They need to be fully blacklisted by queer people and their allies. Don't work for them. Don't use them for book press. Don't speak with them for stories. They made their bed.
