On the twenty-fifth anniversary of 9/11, I'm remembering the people we lost. I'm thinking of Nicole De Martini and the countless others whose lives were changed forever that morning. I'm also reminded of the heroism that left such an impression on me at seventeen and stays with me today.

We cannot know exactly what Frank felt that morning. But we know what he did.
In terrifying circumstances, he gave others a chance to live. Then he turned back to help those still hoping for a way out.

Their story makes me wonder where that kind of courage comes from. Whether it's something we all carry inside us without knowing it, or something given to us when the situation demands it.

I often think about how I would respond in a moment like that. It's easy to imagine the fear I would be experiencing. It's far more difficult to imagine having the courage to do what Frank and his colleagues did.

Their efforts enabled at least fifty people to reach safety.

Together with colleagues Carlos da Costa, Mak Hanna, Pablo Ortiz, and Pete Negron, Frank worked to force open jammed doors and clear debris, freeing people who'd become trapped. As those they rescued headed downstairs, the men continued searching for others in need of assistance.

After the plane struck his building, Frank guided his wife, Nicole, to a stairwell where she could begin her escape. He remained behind to help others.

People who had gone to work or boarded a flight that morning found themselves facing decisions none of us can ever truly prepare for. Some risked their lives to save complete strangers. Many never came home.
