I excel at leaving. I can make up my mind, pack everything I own, and burn a bridge before you know how the fight ended. I can excise myself and my beloved things with precision and care, but quick as the whip of a gator’s tail, and leave you with nothing but remnants of me, of us. If you don’t reach out, you can pretend I died, because you’ll never hear from me again. You may hear about me, but that’s only if you ask, because anyone who knows me understands that I’m done. I’m done with you. I’m done with this tragedy we lived, however short or long, and I won’t revisit it. Not where you can see me. I’ll traverse it in my mind. I’ll go over the charred remains and pick at the wound, but you won’t know. It’s all in my head. It’s all in my heart. But you’re not, not anymore, not once I’ve decided we’re through.
