The first really noticeable construction work happened last week to replace the northbound U.S. Highway 101 bridge over the Eel River near Rio Dell.The first section of the bridge and the green-colored truss structure for that section were demolished last week. According to a Caltrans statement, there’s plenty more work ahead. “The remaining bridge and piers two to four are expected to be removed by the end of September, with the temporary rock berm in the river expected to be fully removed by mid-October,” a statement issued by the agency said.

The bridge is located on the Lower Rhine River between Emmerich and the Netherlands, yet we do not know where the structure is exactly. Nor do we know the bridge's history. What we know about the structure is that it has multiple spans, and the photo taken by Lothar van Hall shows the point truss approach spans with the through truss bridge in the background.

BELOIT, WI- Wisconsin has some rare historic truss bridges, many of which had their connections with the bridge builders in Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin. One of the more known bridge builders that constructed many of these bridges was the Wisconsin Bridge and Iron Works Company, the same company that built the Hastings Spiral Bridge in 1895.

The next bridge on our tour in the north of Germany and western Denmark takes us to Kiel. As capital of Schleswig-Holstein and largest city, Kiel has some of the finest bridges of different types and coming from different eras. The glorious Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, connecting Staten Island and Brooklyn, marks the entrance to New York Harbor. Nearly every cruise ship and many of the largest container ships arriving at the Port of New York and New Jersey must pass beneath its span. We're taking you back 17 years ago to my home state of Minnesota. 2009 was my daughter's first ever trip to the US and this was the first ever bridge she saw. The Shakopee Bridge is a riveted Warren deck truss bridge that spans the Mississippi River. Built in 1927 by Edward Kraemer & Sons, the bridge carried Hwys. 169 and 212 for over 65 years before the highways were realigned- 212 through Chaska, and 169 towards Bloomington.
