Wei Ying scoffed. “What’s anyone going to do to us, Lan Zhan? Kill us? There’s no one here.” Despite his outward confidence, there was a sobering downturn in the curve of his lips, and his hold loosened.
Regret lanced through Lan Wangji like a knife piercing his ribs. Unthinkingly, his hold on Wei Ying tightened, drawing the man into him until their bodies pressed together as they walked. He stared straight ahead as they followed the signs toward the entrance to the store, waiting for him to pull away, but instead, he felt the warm weight of Wei Ying’s head coming to rest on his shoulder. A soft sigh by his ear solidified it. He did not care who saw, and he did not care what they might say. It would be a small, bordering insignificant thing for him to ensure they never spoke again. *Let them look.*
