For all the replies saying "but public transit is terrible, I have to wait an hour for the bus"... comrade, what you are suffering from is the *absence* of public transit.

Everyone likes free stuff. Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I believe if TriMet was free ridership would skyrocket.

TriMet is counting the number of people who don't pay, on the bus at least, so they know how many people are riding regardless if they have fare. When a person boards the bus and doesn't pay, the driver hits a button on that screen that adds them to a tally.

I belive TriMet cares more about how many people are riding than how many aren't paying.

I understand wanting to adhere to societal norms. But I personally think they should just come and ride the bus. Even if someone puts in a dime, I'll still give them a transfer. Fare accounts for, I think, less than 10% of TriMets revenue.

As a driver, I see about 40% of riders not pay. And about half of them do so without saying a word to me.

When was the last time you saw a bus driver turn away someone for not paying? Because if you have, they're not supposed to. Drivers can inform someone of the fare, but cannot enforce it. In my opinion, TriMet should be free for everyone.
