I am the thing that goes blog in the night.
The ReBoot episode with the X-Files pastiche and the Web creature. (Trust No One, from season 2.)
In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

This is a quick workup of what the night sky might look like on a world close to the galactic core.

The planet is a rendering by Martin Kornmesser, to which I added the JWST image. So this scene is suggestive more than scientifically accurate.

But still... imagine growing up under a sky like this.

Bless the memory of Stanislav Yevgrafovich, the Man Who Saved the World.

At a moment when it mattered, he chose humanity.
Happy Stanislav Petrov Day

He passed in 2017. As Encyclopedia Britannica puts it, “He is survived by his two children, two grandchildren, and the entire human race.”

If you don't know his story, please take 3 minutes now to learn it.

My brain: So, is the robot dementia exhibited by so many Mr. Handy units due to centuries over-writing of memory or radiation corruption of code?

I'm baffled, yet kind of intrigued. Where are they selling it
Kraft Dinner has turned its iconic mac & cheese into a cream soda flavor

It's only available in Canada for a limited time

This is not mine but I think the best analogy for this I've encountered, the one people really seem to get in their bones, is "would you rather do an easy homework assignment yourself or edit the work of someone who did it badly"
Fun fact: "Reviewing an AI made translation" is more work for translators than just translating it themselves, because AI translations do not pass the sniff test beyond the most superficial. It's a loophole companies use as an excuse to underpay translators, and nothing else.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state.

A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface.

And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).

I love train graffiti and I love that yard workers are largely just “if you don’t make a mess or fuck with my job then go for it” and the writers responded with “you got it, chief”
Take a break from being depressed that everything you love is being destroyed by slop for a moment and let me tell you about the beautiful symbiotic relationship between graffiti writers, train yard workers, and model train enthusiasts.

NEW: MapQuest is currently the number one navigation app on the Apple App Store, overtaking Google Maps thanks to Google's decision to follow Trump's lead in renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America.
