500,000 was a minimum in the original guidance not a proposed average!

Well, ok, but then "it would be the largest of the new councils being created" is a circular argument when the case against the decisions is that the government ignored its own guidance (500k minimum population, continuity in social care) in favour of political decisions for smaller authorities.

The largest unitary council is surely Birmingham with a population of over a million?

Lose the blue box, you say? Move with the times, you say?

I'm not sure a Boris Bounce is very relevant in Oxford City where most of Labour's seats are though. Are the Conservatives even 2nd anywhere?

I think it's deeper than that, there are areas where they are willing to stand on principle and areas where they aren't and I think it's got demographic undercurrents and relates to Oxford being a weird sort of place.

I have a view about how this situation arises, developed over a long period of time, but I don't know if it's right and it's not really for public messages especially not in campaign season.

In a world where support for active travel measures is more or less 60-40 and elections are FPTP it's better to have 2 parties for them and 2 parties against them than 3 parties for them and 1 party against them...

It's obstructive of the access to and from the river path and even when they aren't blocking the cycle path itself they are dangerously driving across and along it to get there in a place where a cyclist or pedestrian should not have to, and may not be expecting to, worry about motor vehicles.

I would say that Oxfordshire CC has made a lot more progress on policies to get people less car-dependent than West Berkshire has.

It's not mismanagement to stick to your available budget. It's mismanagement to go so far outside it you need an emergency £180 per resident per year from the Treasury.

If Oxfordshire were spending an extra £140m a year (the per capita equivalent) we could have gold plated roads!

"Life support" for a local authority is called EFS funding, when the government recognises they've got into a state where they can't balance the books.

Oxfordshire CC is not in that position. West Berkshire is though, to the tune of £30m a year.

Pebbles was, however, very interested in your coverage of the high volume of construction work taking place in the city and county.
