It's almost entirely free on Kmanga! It is a straightforward tennis manga, no powers or anything. The protag is not the best, he just works hard and he gets better by not by new special moves, but in the way actual tennis players do: adding tools and using them to construct points in new ways.

When I first read Baby Steps in this message, I thought of the great tennis manga, then I finished reading what you wrote, looked up the game, and...definitely different.

In fact How the “Makyu” starts on 68. Correction for the inevitable for printings 😀

Suggestion for anime film: I just watched Mumei no Jinsei and thought of you. The director seems to have learned from Wes Anderson still framing, limited movement, cutting to after things are done can be really funny, scary, shocking, etc. if done right. Plus musings on the future of humanity.

Not sure if you have checked out Patlabor yet, but the original TV series reminds of Dirty Pair in the sense that you get a nice group of character with whom you just want to hang out for a while. Nothing too challenging but from that same era.

Apropos of nothing, I know you were thinking about sci-fi series to start a little while ago. I just finished 80s Patlabor and I could see it being up your alley. The films are completely Oshii, and sort of feel like their own thing, but the original series and 16ep OVA are great character series.

Honestly. I was shocked by just how hamstrung the entire production became by its inability to write its titular character. You would think they could figure her out beyond just always against violence and Nemu.

So happy they are selling. I got mine when it was first released and just finished reading. If it took me that long to read, I can only imagine the amount of work it required...thanks! Looking forward to if/when another comes edition out at some point in the future.

I should mention I read somewhere that those episodes are absolutely inessential, so skipped from the first to the last of those. Seems like it was a good decision.

So happy you liked Future Boy Conan as much as I did! I recently finished Nadia: Secret of Blue Water recently and I do not know if Conan inspired Anno, but I think I watched Nadia wishing it had better writing like Conan.

I started with the original series and will be finishing up my run through everything pre-Flash in the next week. It is such a great ride. Kei and Yuri are just about perfect protagonists (just missing explicit queerness).
