The context: Returning to the city I was born and raised in.
The realization: The neighbourhoods I’ve been told are “dangerous” are actually just the neighbourhoods that are racialized.
The heartbreak: People don’t even know they’re perpetuating that shit. Or if they do, they’re real big jerks.

Kids are counting genders of everyone at the table. “No, Teacher Cayley isn’t a girl, she’s a BOY-girl.” An argument ensues. “She’s a girl!” Kid turns to me. “You’re a boy-girl because you talk like a boy.” No idea what they mean by that but I’m here for the non-binary validation ✌️

What does it mean that children constantly ask if I’m pregnant because I have a curvy tummy? Especially in summer clothes. I am not preggers; this stomach is how real bodies look. What are they internalizing that an unremarkable, unfiltered stomach that isn’t perfectly flat equates with pregnancy?
