Their position is based on the ahistorical clanger of conflating "symbolic" with "ineffective". Symbolic acts can be very effective, hence the backlash.

Have to say this is a very fair criticism. I criticised Starmer for waiting ages to condemn Tommy Robinson’s mobs in London. But this is even more frustrating because Burnham is popular and could have real impact.
