I remember something in the novelization that said the path to sickbay was blocked by battle damage. In a daze, Scotty instinctively went to Kirk for help rather than finding an alternate route to sickbay.

I imagine the conditions on the planet required Terrell and Checkov to go to the beamdown point to return. Contacting the ship and beaming from within the remains of the Botany Bay would have been difficult.

I think David Marcus' cynicism about Starfleet is actually about resentment that Kirk focused on Starfleet rather than him, even though it was at his mom's request. David may also have guilt about using proto-matter in the Genesis matrix, possibly increasing the chance of its being weaponized.

I think Kirk is nervous about Saavik taking the ship out because he doesn't want to become one of those annoying TOS admirals standing behind the command post micromanaging instead of letting the young people do their jobs.

It was established in Day of the Dove that intra-ship beaming "has rarely been done because of the danger involved. Pinpoint accuracy is required." When we saw inter-ship beaming, it was often between transporter rooms. Beam directly into rooms on ships without a second thought came later.

I should have introduced my wife to #Trek with this episode instead of the great episodes that require you to know the franchise. That was a great suggestion. I loved hearing your discuss and episode we all love.

I just realized that Captain Remart looked like he has something uncomfortable to say about Charlie, but Charlie rolled his eyes back and made him and his colleague immediately start praising Charlie.

Maybe because I saw it as a kid in the 80s, I thought of that inverted stairmaster thing in sickbay as looking really space-age.

Maybe Captain Ramart was saying 400 people would feel like a city for someone who lived along most of his life.

Kirk is faking being pissy about his female crewmembers accepting gifts. He's doing an act of primitive jealousy to goad Trelane into the duel. Shatner conveys that Kirk doesn't mean any of it.

Regarding the racism, I'd like to think Kirk dismisses it because it's like some ancient racism between ancient Persians and Assyrians that is meaningless today.

It makes me think how we know if we see an assault, we know we should help and/or call for help. We know what to do for a fire. But we have no formula for everyone going berserk on each other. The landing party just went to sleep.

I think the crew failed to help Red Hour victims because *everyone* was going crazy at the same time. There was no clear aggressor. I got the idea that the madness would caused everyone to move back and forth from victim to aggressor and back, purging a year's worth of repressed desires.

I loved your positive take on this episode. I too remember the kids being annoying, but there was more to the episode than that.

There was cut dialog where McGivers admits to her friend she has a submission kink, and Khan was a major dom. I think that's what they were going for, but as you said, it doesn't make sense she'd betray her colleagues and ruin her career over this kink.

I love how Kirk refuses to argue with Khan about the concept of some people being superior to others. Kirk says his questions "have all been answered" in a way that conveys to me he understands what Khan's ideology is about and does not think it's worth responding to. youtu.be/14L2tVYNPZg?...

I think the deal with Kirk and his colleagues admiring Khan is they wanted it to be a struggle between two strong leaders, irrespective of their ideologies. Spock said it was illogical. Maybe the viewers are meant to agree.
May 26, 2026 at 8:45 PM
I agree the double-stanrdard was really bad with Kirk criticizing McGivers for being distracted by a good-looking person they meet, while this happens to men all the time and it's taken as a funny fact of life.

I never liked that they lied about having not watched Kirk's video. At first I thought they didn't want to admit they gave up on Kirk being alive, but there excuse is they just didn't get around to it in the midst of the crisis. I guess the idea was they needed the order but didn't want to admit it.

I remember thinking they got out of the web as a lucky consequence of being in interphasic space, but you have a good point that it was probably an artifice to wrap up the episode quickly.
