Im pretty sure you can't take away elemental powers by killing the master, they must be alive for any of the methods of taking the powers like trophy, chen's staff, aspheera's staff, chronosteel...

I have a theory that the Balance energy was still flowing since the smybol was still glowing but less and less every time until it went completly dark, and when Ninjas freed the Balance's soul and corpse it probably is what completly shut it off
