Love this film. Watched it on repeat back in the day when it was a staple on the IFC channel in the late 90's.

The pieces Rayns wrote for Sight and Sound back in the day were mandatory for me. As a teenage film lover in podunk Texas, I never quite knew how to see all the films he talked about, but, over time, it made me seek them out. That's what a great writer does.
Our understanding of East Asian cinema would be a sliver of what we know if it wasn’t for Tony. He did a program at Bologna one year of ridiculously rare Chinese films from 1947-1953 that basically don’t exist on any of the rare torrent sites, much less even VHS or DVD. RIP to a legend
RIP Tony Rayns, one of the few English-language critics who genuinely knew what they were talking about (most of the time) when it came to East Asian cinema, especially Hong Kong's.

Very high on my favorite films of last year. Saw it alone in the theater and was transfixed. The final third is just beyond words magical.
