Carpenter was able to secure rare permission to film at Liberty Island at night — the first film crew to be granted such access. However, there’s a hidden cut in the scene during a panning shot that transports us from New York City to the Sepulveda Dam over 2,500 miles away in Los Angeles.

The exterior scenes of the Liberty Island Security Control Building were filmed on Liberty Island — that Statue of Liberty you see in the film’s early scenes wasn’t a miniature, it was the real thing!
