I may have shared this before somewhere, but here’s some katydid faces from Costa Rica, a land of many fine bugs
A collage of nine colorful katydid faces. Most have tall, rectangular heads large eyes of variable color, green, red, yellow, white, bright blue. Most have “staring” pseudopupils, a trick of the light and human facial recognition. On several, the three simple eyes are quite plainly seen, two between the antennae and one below those. Most are green, but some are brown and one has a bright blue face. Several are ornamented with a “forehead” horn or crown of spikes.

Humaning.

A crayon artist sits with their legs crossed in a chair next to a wall they have covered in dinosaur illustrations. They are wearing overalls and a bandana. They exude the confidence of an artist who has seen their vision to completion. However, like many creators, their vision is not shared by everyone. They are confronted by a man in a sweater vest, “Heard you been drawin dinosaurs on my walls.” The artist replies, “You heard right.” Artist’s note: I try to do my drawings quickly so they maintain that spontaneous feel I’m going for (something we’ve discussed in previous posts). For this one I ended up redrawing the artist’s pose and subtle facial expression over and over again until it felt right.

Reef squid (genus Sepioteuthis) are some very charismatic cephalopods that are commonly found close to the shore.

They are curious and social squids, often found in squads. They communicate with each other, sometimes by changing colour.

Three Caribbean Reef Squid (Sepioteuthis sepioidea) in a line. They are all in roughly the same pose: mantle pointing to the upper right, limbs in two groups, one pointing left and the other pointing down. They look like a chorus line. They has a translucent pink colour with red horizontal stripes on the mantle and red on their limbs. There is a human swimming in the back right, facing away. A squad of Bigfin Reef Squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) swimming. It is open water as far as you can see. There are dozens of squid, but one is right n ground of the camera. They are brown squid with a torpedo shaped mantle and two fins that go the length of their mantle. The squids all are roughly horizontal and have their limbs together, although the squid are pointing in different directions. A squad of fifteen Bigfin Reef Squids (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) swimming just below the surface of the water. The squids are all pointing in the same direction (back and to the left) and all their mantles are pointing upwards. All their arms are together. Most of them have their arms pointing down but some have them pointing forward. They are all dark red with translucent fins and a silvery eyes that look blue because of the water. The water is light blue, and you can see the surface of the water in the background, along with reflections of the sunlight. A squad of three Southern Reef Squid (Sepioteuthis australis) swimming. The camera is below and angled up, so you can see the surface of the water and beams of light coming through the water. The squids have their arms held together. Their fins, which go the length of their mantle, are flapping. The squids are a darkish orangish red, and the water around them is light blue.

Bobtail and Bottletail Squids (order Sepiolida) are a small and adorable group of cephalopods.

Most bobtail squid (family Sepiolidae) species are bioluminescent, which they used to hide their silhouette at night; no bottletail squid species (family Sepiadariidae) is bioluminescent.
A Southern Bottletail Squid (Sepiadarium austrinum) sitting on white sand. Its arms are close to its body and are sweeping to either side. Its leftmost arm is raised slightly. It has some sand on top of its head and mantle. The bottletail squid is a vibrant orange colour, except for some white above its eyes. A Berry's Bobtail Squid (Euprymna berryi) sitting on a sandy seafloor. The bobtail squid is so small that the grains of sand are clearly visible. The bobtail squid has its arms tucked back so there are below its head and part of its mantle. The back end of the mantle is resting on the ground. The bobtail squid is a beautiful mix of iridescent yellow, green cyan and blue, with a bunch of black and dark brown chromatophores covering its body like spots. The background is out of focus and blurry. A Striped Pyjama Bottletail Squid (Sepioloidea lineolata) sitting on the sand. It is white with black to dark brown lengthwise stripes and it has some sand on its head, right above its eyes. The top of its eye is orange. A close up of a Stubby Bobtail Squid (Rossia pacifica) sitting on the sandy sea floor, facing the camera. It is quite close so it looks like you are lying down next to the bobtail squid and it is looking into your eyes with its horizontal pupils.. Its mantle is behind it and its are going down and mostly hidden. The bobtail squid is covered in red chromatophores and has some blue and green chromatophores, especially round the eyes. The sand is beige.

This black dragonfish (Idiacanthus sp.) was spotted at 527 meters (1,729 feet) in Monterey Bay. Black dragonfish are built for life in the darkness of the deep ocean. Their ultra-black skin helps them stay camouflaged from prey like fishes and crustaceans. 🐉🖤⁠
