The present corner building is thought to date from about 1850 to 1870. The shopfronts have changed a lot since Harold Poulter captured the scene, with the awnings and painted adverts all gone, but the shape of the upper floors still makes the match clear.

The modern view shows just how much this part of town has changed. The market stalls have gone, the street is far more open, and the recent redesign of St Nicholas Square was intended to create a space for meeting, outdoor seating, events and new market activity.

The wider area has an even longer story. The street takes its name from St Nicholas Church. A local history account says the church began in the 12th century, was rebuilt in the 14th century, restored in 1875 to 1876 by Sir George Gilbert Scott, and was demolished in 1955 for redevelopment.

Colchester’s market is very old indeed, with historians tracing it back to Saxon times, and later civic rights confirmed by royal charter. In other words, this stretch of town has long been tied up with shopping, trade and daily life.
