I’m sure that for anything actually difficult they call in either the state or the county sheriff. Why have a local department at all? It’s just another layer of bureaucracy.

The Macklemore thing is more proof that pro-Israel activists have just lost the ability to persuade. All it can do is browbeat anyone opposed to them. That doesn't work when you're -25 in public opinion.

My view is that there’s zero reason more traditional liberals couldn’t mirror the outrage except they’re apparently in some weird cultural bubble where being the public vehicle for strong feelings is embarrassing

DSA’s great advantage is that tens of millions of people are looking for politicians who will mirror the outrage they feel about Trump and his attack on our country, and DSA at least does not feel shy about expressing outrage.
I disagree with the economic platforms of DSA but if this is what Democrats have to say on Iran then let’s go DSA
this seems perhaps deceptively clipped and also there is absolutely no way this should be the tenor of any component of any Democrat’s statement about the Iran War

If, as seems to be the majority view here, you dislike the prospect of a world where human journalism and analysis is displaced by AI slop, have the self-awareness not to act annoyed and offended that the human labor of writing sometimes requires compensation.
If you respond "paywall" to someone posting an article link, I'm going to block you in a heartbeat.

Not a lot of room to debate wonky policy ideas when the republic is collapsing in a constant constitutional omni-crisis because the president is both insane and a fascist.

Mass politics and elections always ran more on vibes than policy. What's collapsed is how much policymakers and high-info nerds and news junkies focus on policy because it's crowded out by the constant Trump-centric insanity. And that was only ever a tiny slice of the public but it was load-bearing.
This is going to make me sound old and maybe a little nostalgic but it’s really striking how in the Trump era, no one even pretends to debate about policy anymore.

What Erin Reed said, very explicitly, is that it’s preferable for Republicans to win instead of Dems who are shaky on trans issues. That’s a de facto endorsement. I’m not sure she actually believes this (it implies we should vote for the Republicans!) but it’s undeniably what she said.

It's kind of interesting that some people's commemoration of the killing of Charlie Kirk sound like other people's commemoration of 9/11, an event that is objectively 3000x worse than Kirk's death.

It's just so very telling that "dangerous ideas" always meant "very old and beneficial to the status quo" and *never* things like "women will only be truly liberated once we have artificial wombs" or "we should abolish landlords".

Also, frankly, there’s something… seedy and unsettling? …about a bunch of people in the richest country on earth pretending at economic despair.

Nobody’s saying life is easy for everyone but on average Americans are incredibly economically fortunate to live here. The solipsism is unnerving.

We had an unprecedented shift toward absentee balloting during the pandemic and we should have a far more precedented shift to in person voting now that Trump's fucking with the mail
My very, very best advice if you're voting by mail aligns with what many election administrators recommend. If you put your ballot in the mail, do it ASAP and check to make sure it was received. Even better is to return it to a dropbox or deliver it in person at the election office.

State officials say they worry about the Postal Service’s ability to deliver votes this fall. They are urging voters to mail their ballots early or use drop boxes so their votes count.

In fact if there's one political message that should reach everyone on Bluesky, the website for Democratic politics obsessives afraid to leave their own house, it's that you should vote in person this year.

Democrats are screwing up the US-Canada relationship and their own political best interests by not clearly committing to undo Trump’s actions here.

The thing is you have to be a party hack right now if you care about good things because basically nothing matters more than republicans losing and democrats winning, but lots of people want to not be party hacks more than they want good things.

If an adult buys a baby doll and gleefully acts out violence against it, I think it’s reasonable to ask if something untoward is going on even though no one would argue the doll is a person. Again this is about what is happening in the head of the person doing it, not about the effect on the target.
AI isn't a real person. We use "she" for ships and give them names and none of us actually believe ships are people.

I can call a slow computer a 'potato' but it doesn't mean I think it's a vegetable.

AI isn't a person. Calling it a 'clanker' or a 'toaster' isn't a slur.
