cow, any pronouns, NixOS user, fooling around with servers. I mostly set up this pds to try Tangled.
had to have the same discussion with an over 40 person today lol

Doubt valve would lock something like that down. It is ARM though and likely requires some kernel patches though it shouldn't be too hard to get running.

If you want to do packet inspection on the firewall then you will need more CPU performance than a basic NAT/firewall system so keep that in mind.
September 14, 2026 at 3:50 AM
If you go the diy route, I wouldn't worry too much about performance unless you are trying to do 10G in which you need an okish CPU, or anything higher (25G,40G,100G) in which you probably want to look into platforms with more hardware offloading.

I run a NixOS firewall but on dedicated hardware. I do not recommend running firewalls in VM for anything except the workloads within the server. For dedicated hardware I personally like the Lenovo ThinkCenter Tiny or Dell SFF (often very cheap used) pcs with PCIe NICs though anything works.

And to be fair those WD drives don't even look very overpriced to me with how horrible storage pricing is.
September 14, 2026 at 3:21 AM
I would have said the same 3 years ago, "always buy new drives it's worth it". Now look at me filling my home servers with over 5 year old SSDs.

mastodon handles start with @ so that looks more like an email-ism to me at least

Stop all the services on the DigitalOcean but don't delete the VPS until everything is up and operational on the new VPS. Take backups of course.

thank you for fixing the accent color foreground issue I was talking about a few days ago :3

Mostly Jitsi Meet for now with the reference instance but I'd like to self-host something at some point, maybe the LaSuite Meet one.
September 8, 2026 at 11:34 PM
idk why that didn't come to mind quicker but thanks for clarifying. 🐄

I'm sorry but I don't think I understand what you mean?

Deduplication is also pretty effective for the store I've heard if you're on something like ZFS.
September 7, 2026 at 8:28 AM
Not having things you don't need in the store at all. Look at the minimal and perlless profile (make sure you read what it does before enabling it) as it can save some disk space. Disable services and remove packages you don't need.

In fedi there isn't much need for logging into stuff with your account other than client apps in which they often just say log in with mastodon. Almost every microblogging activitypub implementation implements the mastodon API.

this is what it looks like for me. not sure if intentional or not.

really cool update, thank you! I did some messing around with the themes and tried making one. could very well be user error but the "on accent" color doesn't seem to work for me and instead it uses the normal text color though I might have done something wrong. witchsky.app/profile/did:...

not sure, I don't use or really know that much about guix though it doesn't use systemd. Might be possible to extract the repart/sysupdate parts from systemd and run independently or just implement similar functionality without systmed.
August 29, 2026 at 1:22 AM
It sorta exists already, nixos has modules for systemd-sysupdate and related tools for a/b partition updates and a few people have gotten it working.

All of this but they still don't have .cow? There's even .cat and .dog but no .cow????? what are they doing?
August 27, 2026 at 6:46 AM
Asahi doesn't suggest or really let you remove MacOS. It just creates a second partition for it so it's not that terrible of an idea.
August 25, 2026 at 12:37 AM
Just happened again. "You need to reset your password" or something like that when I opened the tab and 3 more "removed violations" emails/messages. What's going on???
August 24, 2026 at 2:59 AM
Yeah sorry I wasn't clear that I agree with you and don't support DHH or omarchy at all. I was just posting that about the funding as it seemed to be the #1 reason why some people are giving him the "pass" as they think he will fund free software.
